Gnarly cold starts?

Postby spencerdiesel » Tue Feb 16, 2016 7:07 pm

I almost wish it'd get cold just so I could see for myself........but it started fine at 3 deg not plugged in. Who's done some cold cranking with no block heater?

I did a -15c start once a few years ago with no grids, and not plugged in. She took some cranking, but she fired eventually. starts good now right around freezing with the grid heater working. Even after she sat for 2.5 years.

My pile is pretty pissed off at only 25F...much lower than that if not plugged in, I'm screwed. Don't know why it is that way, always been a cold blooded turd.

Couple years ago I melted the trans in my plow truck, and had to dig out my dually. Been sitting all winter, it was -5* that night, and too far away from a building to plug it in. Cycled the grids once, and it lit like any other day. It was grumbling for 10-15 min till it warmed up.
Since I bought a house, its had some cold starts since there's not always an outlet close. The other morning we had -24* and even after 3hrs plugged in, she was cranky. Had a pretty good lope, really rich exhaust, but she ran good once warmed up, hauled 2tons of pellets just fine.

Haven't installed the grid heaters on my 79/ctd yet. Been running it all winter. No plug in. Down around 10 or below she takes a few tries. But always fires off.

Yall's engines are healthy. I've started at 0 F not plugged in, crappin diamonds watching the oil pressure gauge not reach full psi over 60 seconds later

Mine has somewhere between 182k and 186k. I don't know how far she's gone with the odometer not working/out

No idea as for mileage on mine, lets just say there wasn't much cross hatching left in the cylinders last time the head was off and has quite a bit of blow by. It's been worked really hard before I bought it back, and I haven't been the easiest on it either. For chits and kicks, I'm guessing over 300K.

Never checked. Runs smooth and hard, just burns a little oil on start up and pukes a bit when pushing into the low 40's for boost. I just checked the oil when I fueled up this morning, it's two quarts low, which is about right. It'll burn/lose 1 gallon every 4000 miles or so.
