Updated! SXE 62\68\12 non I/C engine

Postby IH4life » Thu Mar 03, 2016 1:27 pm

Hello my name is Kelsey and this is my first post. I typically lurk in the shadows using the search button to help me make my diesel decisions but I have finally broke down and joined this forum for a little help. Im currently finishing up the plumbing on my intercooler on my Cummins project and have been shopping for some more HP. I feel like ive read every post from every forum and have even made a few calls to some reputable diesel shops with conflicting turbo information.

I have new stock non I/C injectors and the Baby H1C and im looking to upgrade after my I/C is hooked up to find my pyro baseline. cruising temps at 65mph my pyro is around 800* and pulling hills empty I have to down shift to 4th because of temps (1300* with ease). hence the reason for the new intercooler upgrade. I know for certain I wanna ditch the H1c but to what... looking to get around 350hp. I have the $ to buy a new turbo but cant make up my mind on which one to get. I called a shop in Portland Oregon that deals with HTT and said that I should keep the stock turbo and upgrade the injectors? but my understanding is you can make my desired HP with the stock non I/C injectors? so im just looking for some insite from all of you out there on internet land on your opinion and what your setup is. I was pretty set on getting a new S300 but after talking to a few people maybe that isn't the best option...

Welcome! If you can hit 1300* easy then bigger injectors are not what you need. You can turn up the pump a lot for more fuel before needing larger injectors. You need more air. The IC will help, but a better turbo is most likely the best bet. You need to talk to RCummins on here, he owns "The Hungry Diesel" and caters to the 1st gen owners. He is very knowledgeable about turbos and will help you out. You won't be able to PM until you get 25 useful posts, but I'm sure he will chime in as soon as he sees this.

Hey PT! It's funny that you mention that, I just got off the phone with him and bought the new 62 sxe turbo! I'm pretty excited to say the least, will keep the post updated as my progress continues.

You could do acceleration vids. Then post them in the 0-60 thread :D

SXE 62\68\12 non I/C engine install

Postby IH4life » Fri Mar 11, 2016 4:21 pm

Disclaimer - this motor is on a Dodge frame that's been moved back 4" and I'd now under an international body!

Finally got the turbo and mostly in. Just waiting for the 4" exhaust flange which should be here Moday or Tuesday. and need to figure out how to bolt down the throttle linkage as i installed a 2nd gen intake horn which is the location where the bracket mounts??? After removing the stock turbo the first thing I found when trying to install the new SXE was the exhaust down pipe is two far forward and has to be moved back maybe three inches which for me is no biggie, not sure on a Dodge cab. (After I get the exhaust bolted up I'll get some clearance measurements) On a side note don't EVER EVER use cheap exhaust U Bolts to connect your exhaust or you will end up like me and having to cut your exhaust in half just to get it out. Spend the few extra dollars and get the nice stainless band clamps!

It was a pretty simple swap from the baby h1c. If you tell Eric at the hungry diesel what it's going in he'll send some fittings for the oil supply line and it bolts up. The studs on the manifold also bolt up though a pain in the ass to get to! The oil return line doesn't fit though. Because of the larger setup and the solid return lines. You can buy the newer flexible return line for around $60 online. I chose to cut the line and spliced in some high temp silicon 3/4" hose for now(pictures). Also you have 3 compressor outlet choices. I went with the v flange and bought the compressor elbow of eBay and the clamp from Eric. Just an FYI Eric was very helpful through the process of what I wanted and needed, so thanks. I also installed my 2nd gen intercooler and BHAF during the turbo swap. Which took me a total of maybe 2 hours. Would have been longer if I had the exhaust flange. I'll try to post some pics of what it looks like.

Also if anyone has intercooled a non I/C if be interested to see how you mounted your bracket. That is if you used a newer stock intake horn.
