Hard to start

Postby Dodgebob1980 » Mon Mar 07, 2016 6:04 pm

Well I'm having a small problem. I have a 77 d100 with a 91 12v inter cooled. After it sits at night it's hard to start. Not the intake heater as its never been hooked up. Ambient temp was around 80 today. Is the pump failing or could it just be bleeding off. I can't find any leaks. It's dry. Filter not that old. Any common things to check. Also not the fuel shut off. Any advice greatly appreciated. It will only start if I put it on the floor.

Must be sucking air. Usual suspects are fuel heater oring/electrical conection(it'll leak fuel/suck air there). One of the very first issues on my truck was the diaphragm fuel pump caused this for me.

Injection pump could be going as they start the engine at full fuel and reduce with engine rpm. That's the reason for the black cloud at startup.

Hard starting From sitting over night it is most likely an air leak in the fuel system some where. The sealed fuel system, if there is a place for air to get in, will start to drain back towards the tank. Then when starting, it can take a few cranks to prime the system again and get it to fire.

My motor will do this when sitting for 2-3 days....I have a leaky injector or two that cause the drain back, as well as the fuel line fittings at the lift pump weaps a bit and allows air to leak past.

Thanks for the help. I found the culprit. Just a banjo fitting. All better now. I think. I'll let it set a couple days and see. Thank you again.
