oil temp sensor possible position

Postby jethro » Fri Apr 01, 2016 7:33 pm

My ford has oil temp in dash but I understand cummins didn't have a place on engine for a sensor.
(could have welded a fitting into pan if I had thought that far ahead..... )

The only general area I can think of to measure oil temp would be the lines for turbo. First thought of return (drain)
line - but wondered if oil might be hotter or cooler there than in engine.

Then I wondered (!) if I could make a fitting that would bo in between the oil supply line and the hole where it screw into
the filter adapter. That intermediate fitting could have a port for the screw-in temp sensor......
Would that work OK ?????

Any failure modes ?

Can't you adapt it into the 2nd port on the filter head? If not, Teeing into the turbo line may work.

Yes- I think that is what I am referring to---- the filter housing has 2 ports on the top-- one bigger and one smaller-
I have an oil pressure switch (ford's idiot-switch) in the little one ( 1/8 npt) and the bigger one - has the turbo supply line in it.
I thought the bigger threaded hole would be easier to add an intermediate fitting into........
Does that sound reasonable ?

One teed into the vacuum pump supply line may work as well

You could Tee into any of the 3 fittings and be ok. Might be kinda tight using the one feeding the vacuum pump though.

Most diesels run their temp sensor post oil cooler. Not sure if the 6bt filters oil before or after, but it could be a safe bet to plumb it in around the filter housing. I wouldn't use the turbo oil line, usually turbo oil is post rotating assy and the drain is right to pan (at least with most L10, M11, N14 engines)

Kobane, the turbo oil line comes direct off the filter head. I'm not sure if the cooler is before or after the filter either, never thought about it before.
