VE Pump locked up ... second time?

Postby ArtBee » Sat Apr 09, 2016 12:22 pm

Hello.

I had the VE pump lock up on me a year or so ago on my 93 D250. Removed it and sent it to an injection shop for rebuild/repair (not cheap either) and it worked great for 25K miles (40K Kms) and has locked up again. The gear is wasted of course and I do have a replacement VE and gear from a parts truck but can't understand why this has happened.

So question is ... is the fuel today so hard on mechanical pumps that I should be using an additive and if so then what brand? Or any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Art

Funny you say this......another fellow and I were talking about something similar happening with him and his truck eating pumps. His problem was the cam walking, apparently putting extra stress on the pump. Food for thought.

Ellis, I was thinking of Ryker earlier when I saw this post. His cam was walking and ate several pumps. Is that who you were thinking of?

Yes sir.....that's him. Said it took a while between pumps too. Don't remember exactly how long he said tho.

6-8 months IIRC. I was there when we figured out the problem, the darn cam was walking an 1/8th inch or better. There is a video of it with a dial indicator either here or FB or both. It was pretty wild, most of the gang was there, (Ike, Andrew, MM, Bill, at MM's) and nobody had seen one that bad before.

I just looked up the endplay specs ... .006 - .010. I'll check it out and report back here. Will also check on the spare engine that I have too ... will be removing the front cover the get the pump gear that I need.

Thanks for the replies!

On the engine with the pump issue, I checked camshaft end-play. Didn't have my dial indicator with me when I checked it but I know what .006 - .010 looks like and it surely is in spec. I don't see anything out of the ordinary here but am not excited about fixing the problem without knowing the cause. All I can think of is that I should have replaced the gear the first time the pump locked up, even though it looked pretty darn good.

So what I need now is the part numbers for the key, nut, washer and the gasket between the IP and the case.

Thanks all.
