Kdp got me

Postby 92cummins89 » Mon Apr 25, 2016 6:28 pm

Well the timing housing is cracked not bad just a little split

Got me a new timing housing
But considering just taken off the cover to asses the damage an hopefully everything looks good
If it does was considering just jb welding the crack any ideas or thoughts

Wow first KDP victim I've seen a bunch of years. Sorry for your luck man.

I wouldn't waste my time with trying to JB weld the case. Doubt if it would hold long term.

I'm sure this has been beat to death before, but....

How common is the KDP? Until I really got into the forums, and reading build threads, id never heard of said issue. Dads truck went 298k before we parted it out and never had any issue, never tore it down fo tap the pin. Seems everybody I talk to around here it a case of " my brothers buddy had it happen to him" sorta thing. They fix it cause the magazine told them its the first thing to do. I understand the damage it can do, but in reality, what's the percentage of motors that have issues? We talking 50%, or more?
Granted, I'm gonna do mine when I get around to it, as a precautionary item, just wondered how accurate the issue is.

Just searching for knowledge, nit trying to pick a fight or anything like that

I know on our trucks the percentage is low, the 2nd gens were hardest hit. The 1st gens had a bigger problem with the case bolts coming out. I have seen 2 or 3 of these myself, but my own truck they were tight and the pin was bottomed out.

My kdp looked like it hadn't moved at all, but the truck only had 160k at the time. Pete's right about those bolts, one of mine was "umph" finger tight.....

My KDP hadn't moved but the case bolts were finger tight or less.

We had one engine at work years ago succumb to KDP destruction but only one I've seen.

how many have died from the case bolts??? has any ever fell completely out and wiped the gears? Ok I know there probably has been but I haven't heard of any. Most were caught because they was worried about the kdp.

There have been a few posted on here over the years, and yes, gears have gotten eaten, cams broken, cases cracked.

Doesn't that mail order place near Atlanta that stocks a lot of our 1-st gen parts carry the front housing ????? (cant remember their name---- probably old-timers)

I put torque seal on all the front cover bolts so I might be able to see if any ever moved out later.....
