Valve spring reccomendations

Postby 79Powerwagon » Tue Apr 26, 2016 4:50 am

I know it's been beat to death but what's the consensus on valve springs?

I read 3k rpm, 4k, you need them. 60 lb, Hamilton's, etc.

Going to run 6x13 injectors, small twins, probably clipped 366 spring.

Are 60lb springs ok or will I need heavier?

Kinda like EGT's, there's some grey area when it comes to revs. How many miles are on the stockers, how much boost you will see etc. Because I can't take a seat under my valve cover and watch the action, I keep mine from going over 3300. I think higher boost lowers the safety margin on rpm, but I don't know how much.

If I ran heavier springs I'd add zinc additive to the oil to keep cam/tappet wear to a minimum. Do you need the zinc, probably not. But there's a lot more pressure over worn stock springs, and most modern emission oils don't have zinc and moly anymore.

I know I'll be running 50+ psi. Probably around 3500 rpm.

I'm not as worried about rpm as I am boost...

I did a Hamilton 188/220 cam, 103 springs, maxspool pushrods in my 04. Running zinc. That's a spendy little setup that I'd like to avoid if I can, safely.

3500 rpm & 50 psi? I think the 60 psi springs would be good insurance

I was under that impression until I started digging. Some guys say the 60lbs, some say at that psi they are not enough. Guess I'm wondering if anyone has had an issue.

Hoping someone besides me (and with actual experience) will chime in. RC was running stock springs on his old 12v, it saw 50 psi and 3800 if I remember the dyno vid

I know springs and pushrods make a difference all on their own on the 24v's, but my 165# valvesprings, and the rest of my valvetrain upgrades have sat in a box longer than I've owned my 4th gen.

On a factory cam, you'll be fine. Aftermarket cam, go with 165#.

On a side note, there is no notable gain in clipping a 366 spring. Depending on how it is done, it'll only decrease available fueling via the fuel screw

Ive never got around to changing mine out, ive pegged my 60 psi gauge out from time to time and haven't had an issue. That being said i try to not run that much boost cause i still have the stock springs.
