Heat soak IP fail

Postby cougar » Mon May 16, 2016 10:58 am

I have a bad feeling my pump is going south. Went through everything yesterday morning and everything was perfect. Got the idle adjusted, starting up fine, no problems. Went to the fuel station to fill the reserve and,,,,,,,. Before I shut it down at the station it was idling fine in gear. After pumping 75 gallons I went to turn it around to fill the other side. It started normal, but died as soon as I put it in gear. Started right back up and died again as soon as I put it in gear. Finally got it turned around and filled up. Drove it the 8 miles home and guess what, it kept running in gear at idle. As I think back on it, the day before was run, park, run, park, drive home. HEAT SOAK! That is when the pump is failing. During that time after shut down when there is no air movement and the engine heats up the pump. Looks like I have a pump replacement in my immediate future.

May be air getting in while refueling? I have had my big trucks suck air while refilling tanks.

Run it to get it hot, then shut it off. If it fails to start, pour some cool water over it and then see if it starts. If it does, then the pump is getting bad, if it doesn't, then you have other problems.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Verified, I can duplicate it time and time again. If I let it completely cool down (or cool it down), it's happy. It may have been going on for a while and haven't noticed it until now. Very very rarely do I do stop and go driving. Also I have a tendency to put it in neutral at stop lights because of my tight torque converter. And warmer weather is here.

What ever it was doing, it stopped. Runs normal again and its been hot around here. Maybe something in the fuel. It did get terrible mileage on that tank.
