Towing\Mileage truck

Postby DodgeFreak » Mon Jun 06, 2016 3:59 pm

I'm going to advance my pump some but I believe I have a couple injectors going south on me. it hazes at idle and smokes pretty good which it didn't used to. I have new injectors from a ppump they are 5x.008 I know I'm stepping backwards, the cross sectional area is .000251 compared to .000380. Would I get better mileage with the smaller nozzles and would it burn better with 5 holes? Would I notice seat of the pants power loss with the smaller nozzles? I could try and repop the stock nozzles but I'm not sure if I will need new nozzles or not, I figure I could try theses 5 holers if nothing else.

I pulled a trailer back from Oklahoma and I got 13mpg going down with an empty trailer at 70mph 2-2100 rpm and coming back I got 12.5 with 6-6.5k pounds on the trailer (not sure what the trailer weighs) maybe 8-10k total. I was alittle disappointed as I don't think I should have been under 15 and defiantly shouldn't have been under with an empty trailer.

I think you would notice at least a little power drop and no mileage gain. I put some injectors I think 6x10 in mine when it was stock and noticed a 1mpg increase. I've always heard anything over 2k rpm will kill mileage so maybe slow down a little?

Can't slow down much 60mph is 1750-1800. I'm going to yank the injectors and pop them to see what they are at. I'm assuming most of my issues are injector related as after the trip I've noticed even more black smoke now.

215 ppumps are the others are 5x 008. I had 5x010s on 1st Gen bodies buy someone wanted them worse than me so I sold them. Which was a mistske.

Fwiw my truck has honed 5x10's. Tow great, gives decent mileage as well. I get 18/19 with 4:10s so they should pretty good with your gearing.
I have some 5x8 tips in a box.......want them?

Thanks Ellis but I have a set of 5x8s that have a couple thousand miles on them. I'm thinking about going a head and setting them up on 1st gen bodies and trying it. I have another set of stock 1st gen injectors i'll clean up and repop if I don't like the 5x8s.
