Coolant options

Postby spencerdiesel » Tue Jun 21, 2016 6:55 am

I stay away from the silicate stuff, but what is generally preferred?

And anyone tried any of the coolant additives for more stable operating temps? Supposedly keeps temps stable a little better or something.

http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/0703-turp-cooling-system-additives/ I've used redline and hyper lube with noticeable results using two bottles. A few degrees lower operating temps. Really noticeable if you have a slightly sticky t stat, temps drop almost twice as fast and twice as far when it finally opens lol.

That's pretty sweet, that article was real informative. Does it prolong engine warm up though?

back 14 years ago my cousin had to run water wetter in his 91 Dakota with a hot 360 because it would run hot. He said it would drop the temp quite a bit. I don't think it prolonged warm up but I'm unsure to be honest. plus he is down in Oklahoma.

I don't really recall how it affected warm up, I am pretty sure the diesel version of water wetter is supposed to speed up warm up.

I just put in the green stuff, mixed 50/50 with water, and call it good. No use overthinking it.

Simple sounds good. Any special love for flushing?

Not really, I have always had decent blocks, so I never needed to really flush one. Way back when I had a gasser I flushed out. IIRC I pulled a heater hose and hooked it to a garden hose, and let it run out of the other heater hose. Or maybe I let it run out of the radiator, I can't remember.
If it's really bad you could pull the oil cooler and flush thru there and get a lot of crap out.

I'd dump the antifreeze fill with water add coolant flush bring it up to temp for awhile dump it and let it cool and refill with water and dump it and then full with 50/50 or a tad stronger
