no power

Postby draginmopars » Sat Jul 09, 2016 10:12 am

92- 187,000 miles
new injectors, fuel filter, and lift pump last year

2 weeks ago, seemed to crank longer to start
gauge read 5 psi
changed fuel filter, now reads 6 1/2 psi

1 week ago, out on the road, low on power
not even a slight puff of smoke, under rapid acceleration
idle was lower, turn the power screw 1/2 turn
still not running like it use to

Got to where I was going, NO re-start
cracked the lines, flow looked ok
have power to the shut off

after a hour, tried again, started. drove home > lack of power

Went out of town, for a week
truck started right up this morning
has 6 1/2 psi

HELP

Now what

I was going to look at the fuel shut - off solenoid

Then pull the top to look and see if the power screw lever is cracked/ bending ???
Am I in the right direction???
Thanks
Howard

changed the fuel filter, no improvement
air filter is clean
was going to take the top off the pump, but rear inner bolt is stripped,

is there any place in the Nashville, tn area
to take the pump to have it tested. within 3 hour drive

It sounds like the pump itself could be getting weak.

Called the Diesel power place
They said 2-300 to bench test and calibrate
after telling them what the problem was,
they said sounds like a rotor head issue.
wonder where i can get parts from

Eric on here can get you the parts. I think his username is rccummins. Not sure on the spelling.

Think I'd just buy a new pump. Eric offers some built reman pumps.

The head and rotor, new from Bosch will probably touch 500$......then building the pump/calibration. I'd buy a reman.

up date, got the pump checked out > nothing wrong

re installed, then noticed the Fuel shut off switch >>> HOT

then while installing a mechanical shut off cable, ( gutted the switch)
The reason I gutted the switch is because I don't want to get caught out of town, with a switch failure
cable touched the lower steering column bracket and made a spark....WTH

THEN---- it made sense lol

I had plenty of hints in the past month, > radio going on and off as it wanted
turn signals, making other gauges act silly, when activated
or when pulling the head light on, or press the brake pedal.

I had LOST body ground !!!!!!!!!!

was grounding thru the Fuel shut off switch, then when it got hot
and tried to re-start, couldn't pull the plunger enough to fuel the pump.

I have been 250 miles since, and 15 or more re-starts > truck runs better that ever
after adding multiple grounds to the body/ frame.

All lights are brighter, radio stays on as normal, gauges are steady

AND THANKS to ellis93 for posting the wiring diagrams
after reading them to find the grounding wires, is how I got it fixed
