lift pumps for c series

Postby jethro » Sat Aug 13, 2016 12:20 am

I have a buddy that runs a big motorhome with a mechanical injected c series turbo.
He went on a trip recently and said coming back it would barely go --- fairly soon after getting fuel.

I suggested to him that a big load of water in the fuel was a good possibility..... I described the danger to the IP
of overheating if the fuel flow was very low.

Also described the lift pump diaphragm breaking and the fuel peeing into the oil.

I am wondering---- is the fuel pump setup the same as on the 6bt---- where you can use the 2-nd gen piston
pump instead of the rubber diaphragm....... and would it be the same model pump as the 6bt ?

Thanks--- Tim

I've never seen an 8.3 with a ve, they've all been P7100's. I'd try changing the fuel filter and see if there is a fuel strainer that screws off the bottom of the lp.

YES- I am having him drain a few gallons from the bottom of the tank to see if there is lots of water.
he said the oil was not high--- and did not smell like fuel--

Will change the filter regardless of the sump-draining results.....
will also look for a strainer under the pump------

Thanks-----

Apples to oranges, buuut....on the 8.3's we had when I was in the service, they had a small in-line fuel strainer before the main filter separator that was notorious for plugging up with the bigger stuff that got through the inlet screen on the lift pump. If it has a piston pump, pull the inlet line off and check the screen. Big chunks of sediment or algae can plug it up.
