Diesel engine oil

Postby Richie O » Fri Dec 23, 2016 5:54 pm

I read around a little but not sure I get it. My 55 gallon drum of rotella 15w 40 says CJ-4 rated and a CES20081 cummins rating. Is this ok for the flat tappet camshafts?? Not sure if this was the zinc free crap thats eating old camshafts that don't have roller lifters.

CJ is the zinc free stuff, CI is what you want. Or get some zinc additive to put in the real trucks.

OK, thanks. What a pain in the ass that is. I figured it would be the one I don't want. The thing is I have had it in my equipment for a year. Wonderful. I must have a half a barrel left. Will look around for zinc additive.

CI may be hard to find, you'll have to check with your oil supplier. And then again, the CJ may not hurt anything, it's hard to say. Maybe get some additive and dose the whole drum, it may be easier than dosing each engine as you change the oil. How's that loader working?

I just typed this whole big thing and BAM,,,, went away. Ok, start over I will...

Ok on the additive. I may do that. I have a new 5.9 qsb marine to break in this spring. Not sure if that has flat tappets or rollers?? I also have a 1st service due on a new 4045 deere motor in our 450 e dozer. Pete, what does your company use for oil? Have you had any factory bulletins or recommendations for the older style engines? For all I know the last 3 drums I have had have been the newer oil. Not sure. The last 2 55 gallon drum empties are now my shop stove so the labels and paint have since burned away. Loader is going good. Loaded a few hundred yards with it so not a ton of usage. The e brake is a pain. I adjusted it like you said and it worked for about a week. Back to not holding at all.

On the new 5.9 I have no idea, I don't know a QSB from an ISM or a PMS. I actually do know what an ISM is, but all those letters don't mean much to me normally. Call the Deere dealer and ask them what they recommend.
We actually use 2 types of oil. Case now has Procare, which is a warranty oil change. Case pays for services for the 1st 3 years or 3000 hours, which ever comes 1st, and the warranty lasts that long also. We have to use Case brand oil for that, and we use Mobile oil for everything else. I haven't seen any bulletins about engine oil at all.
Was the disc rusty? It should have held longer than that! Adjust it again, running, brake released, back off the lock nut, tighten the adjuster and back off 1 turn, tighten lock nut.

Will do. I will post back here after I find out. Thanks Pete, and no it was not rusty on the disk. Has some oil soak on it and I am sure that does not help.

Oil doesn't help for sure, but it should hold.
