REALLY simple question about serpantine ----

Postby jethro » Sat Feb 04, 2017 11:50 pm

Anyone know how to stop the serpentine from making that squeaking noise as it goes around ?
Had 2 previous F-150's gassers and they both squeaked the same annoying way......

Could it be brand labelling on the smooth side of the belt that is less grippy than the rest of the belt? Maybe it could be gently scuffed or sanded, and treated with a belt dressing.

Belt dressing on a serp belt will plug the grooves up in the pulleys. ( ask me how I know ) You could try a wire brush on the belt while running engine to buff it. I never had much luck getting one to quiet down other then replace it.

A stiff, frozen or weak/slack tensioner will cause all kinds of issues. There is a happy medium to them.

If I could make a suggestion on belts......find the gates green belt and buy it. O'Reilly's carries it I know.

Take a bar of soap to it while running. Usually quiets them down for a while. Other than that they just need to be clean and dry.

OK----- The belt is a brand new gates---- regular black one with the white name thing-----
I NEVER knew there was another kind of gates to fit it--- You say its GREEN ?????? I will ask about that at oriellys !
I would be afraid of belt dressing as I all ways thought that kind of (slightly) melted the rubber in the belt to make it sticky.
I think I replaced the tensioner and tensioner pulley and bearing.

Thanks to all----- Tim

Just add an "HD" to the belt number you got and you'll get the green one. Example, K080797 is the standard, K080797HD is the green one.

That said, I don't think a different belt is going to fix your problem. I've never had a belt squeak while running unless something is wrong. Bad tensioner, mis-aligned pulleys, bad pulley bearing, excessive load, etc. For the belt to be squeaking, it is slipping on a pulley somewhere because of one of the above reasons.

First, make sure your tensioner is good. If it's not keeping the belt tight enough it will slip on one of the grooved pulleys.

If the tensioner is good then get you a 3'-4' piece of heater hose, hold one end to your ear and hold the other end next to the pulleys one at a time, with the engine running, and you'll find your squeak. I'll bet it'll be a smooth pulley. Then determine why it's slipping. Does that pulley have a bad bearing causing it to be hard to turn or not line up properly? It's bound to be your water pump, idler pulley or tensioner pulley.

I havent never heard this type belts squeak in my machines without some other problem.
But i have hear those regular v-belts slipping more than I want.

My Cummins made weird noises from belt becouse: almost exploded water pump, bad idler, bad tensioner bearing, bad bearing on tensioner idler, fan hub bearing, AC compressor bearing.

I just replaced my tensioner, same belt all squeaks gone. Not only was the tensioner weak but the pulley bearing was nearly dead.
