Engine Sat for 10 years, Now Uncontrolled WOT

Postby ihredneck » Tue Mar 28, 2017 6:36 am

I have so many spare parts I am building a beater W350.

Yesterday I fired up the engine that had been sitting in the shop for around 10 years.
Prior to putting the engine on the stand long ago, I had run it and changed the oil.
To prep for firing, I had changed the fuel filter, installed rebuilt injectors and primed as much of the old fuel out of the system as possible.
After some time of cranking and bleeding the system, it fired up and took off like a screaming banshee!!

I was able to pull the hot lead to the fuel shut off solenoid and the engine shut down so it isn't a real runaway situation.

I still need to pull the top off the pump, but any suggestions as to why?
I'm thinking a broken governor spring, sticky governor....

There is no throttle response at all, just WOT and tons of smoke as I used a hard board to control RPM.

Our pump fire the engine at fuel fuel every time they are started. That's the reason we get that huge puff of smoke at start up. Your pump probably has stuck governor weights/collar/broke spring......something like that. I might would pull the top take a peak for something broken/stuck and if nothing is broke, drain the fuel from the pump and fill it back up with seafoam, let it sit for a few hours/maybe a day. If something is stuck from build up it'll get it free.

when we finally got the engine in the crew cab, the engine that sat for 3 years done that. If you fire it up and before it gets to carried away snap the throttle real quick. Ours must have been stuck and when I snapped the throttle it was enough to jar it loose.

Got the top off and found a few things.
The governor lever assembly was pretty stiff. Also, the governor collar is seized on the shaft.
I turned the engine over by hand before starting, but I'm not sure how the governor collar can be seized and the shaft not rotate being that it is locked to the cam plate with a pin

Pin shear off?
pete

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Tore it down and the collar was seized from moving along the governor shaft, but was able to rotate.
So the ears on the cam plate and pin were not sheared off.

Took quite a bit of persuasion to get the collar to slide off, and after a bit of polishing and reassembly the engine runs great.

Off to finish the build after taking care of the half dozen fuel leaks I have now including a fuel heater delete.
- find fuel tank straps
- install drive shafts
- install cab
- install bed
- install bumpers
- dress out 8)
