Jiggle pins, more T- stat opinions

Postby spencerdiesel » Sun Sep 03, 2017 9:26 am

I apologize in advance for this being hashed out on other threads. I'm usually pretty good about re-visiting older threads for repeat questions, but here goes again:

I've heard a lot of guys say the genuine Cummins stat is the only one to consider. On other cummins forums, looks like a lot of folks have had temp swing issues with the cummins stat.

Being that the Cummins unit has 2 jiggle pins and they have to be lined up in a certain manner, is it possible that most people having problems with them are just not lining the jiggle pins up correctly?

My temp needle is starting to swing after full operating temp is achieved, and I assume I'll be needing a new stat.

Semi related, whats ya'lls vote on coolant for these engines? Extended life recommended or no? SCA additive or no?

Thanks everyone

Temp swing is normal, not going to hurt a thing. There have been lots of attempts to stop it but I don't think anyone has stopped it completely. Personally, I say don't worry about it. Mine's been doing it for over 500K miles.

Does anyone have opinions on whether I should run Rotella ELC NF (nitrite free) or ELC ULTRA. I believe the ultra is also nitrite free.

What I don't know is; does it matter if I use HOAT or OAT? I think both of these coolants are OATs but I don't know that.

I changed coolant about 2.5 years ago but don't remember if it was fleetguard red or rotella red :? I know it's red  Can they mix?

You could always buy the "mixes with everything" coolant and go with it. ;)
IIRC HOAT and OAT are different and can't be mixed. What happened to good old plain green antifreeze?

I know very little (about a lot) about coolant so I did a little research and settled on an extended life coolant. Will any "red" coolant blend fine with any other red?

Do y'all think I should change it after 2.5 years?

I haven't done any research on coolant, so I don't really know. If it's long life though it should be good for 4-5 years I thought.

I was only going to change it if I had the thermostat out, the other day it swung from one end of the gauge (exaggerated) to the other for about 20 mins driving to SC. It's never done that before. Once at full temp, the needle never moves unless I give it enough peddle
