Truck has no balls. please Help

Postby Collers9640 » Fri Nov 17, 2017 2:46 pm

I’m finishing up my project truck or so I thought. My truck will start, run and drive but has no balls and I’m clueless as to what the problem is. Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips or things I can check because I’m lost.

- I verified that I have the correct banjo bolt on the injection pump return line.
- I have a new lift pump installed
- I have a new fuel filter installed
- I have turned up the fuel Screw

Stock is pretty castrated. Fuel screw should help though. How many balls is it missing?

Basic diagnostics first:
How is your boost pressure?
Are you blowing black smoke?

If you have no boost with black smoke, then you have an air problem.

If you have no boost without black smoke, and your engine is slow coming up in RPM, then you probably have a fuel problem.
If you have no boost and no smoke, but your engine is coming up in RPM fast, then it sounds like you have a transmission problem.

All that said, probably a timing issue, maybe a sheared timing key on the pump.

Haven’t got boost gauge hooked up but there is no smoke and the engine revs just fine
Pump was just rebuilt and the trans is a new nv4500

Okay, manual means there aren't any slippage problems.

You can try playing around with timing to see if that makes an improvement.

How much did you adjust the fuel screw? How much adjustment do you have left in the low-idle screw?

Turbo boost pressure is probably the best indicator of consistent engine performance. Stock engines make like 15-17 PSI, and balls don't start to be had until around 25 PSI.

Do you have a pyrometer in the exhaust manifold?

It turned out to be the small pin that rides on the fuel pin inside the pump that was the problem.
The pin was stuck.
