Cummins Vs felpro head gasket with pictures

Postby klofdahl » Mon Jan 22, 2018 8:53 pm

Have a thread in "the good stuff" on a new rebuild but just ran into a hurdle that would be potentially more appropriate here.

I'm looking to check piston to valve clearance with clay but don't have my old head gasket to reuse for the measurements and don't want to risk using my new one. I used Hamilton cams calculator and with my current set up I have .049 clearance. A gasket from what I gather is. 061 so the valves will hit the piston without a a gasket in place.

Bought a cheap $40 felpro head gasket from O'Reilly's this morning and was shocked to find that the gaskets were almost identical. The only difference being there Cummins gasket had an imprinted Parts number and the felpro and the same place was covered with the red stuff and a few areas has extra red stuff on both gaskets? WTF!? $90 difference!

Oh but don't worry......the internet forum mechanics will tell you that it'll blow the second it sees boost
Been working a felpro gasket just like that one for 3/4 years.....no issues.

Wow, I've never seen anything but a Cummins one. I didn't realize the FelPro was so close visually.

I'd say it's the same exact one, not just visually. They covered the Cummins part number with red gasket stuff and the material number is also the same. Made in China stamp also same. Baffling...

I have a Victor Reinz in mine. I got it at work, the Case dealer, it's a factory part for that vintage Cummins in a machine.

I think I'll be returning to Cummins tomorrow for a refund. And picking up another felpro. Hopefully I'm still in the system though as I've lost my receipt. Funny how many threads I've read about OEM Cummins is the only way to go and everything else is inferior or inadequate, head gaskets and pistons being at the top of the list.

Iirc the felpro gaskets were supposedly crappier 10-15 yrs ago. I've had one in my 96 a few years now, no issues. Probably the only thing that doesn't leak on it, besides the fuel system, it doesn't leak..
