Hotwire intake heater?

Postby Remps » Tue Feb 19, 2019 6:23 pm

Well the 4runner broke the timing belt yesterday, at least it broke in the parking stall. Went and got truck out of storage yesterday, this morning ignition isn't working, so no intake heater or fss power. I know how to short the fss to get it going, but not sure on the intake heater? I can't get it to fire without the grid heaters. Just wanting to limp it off the street back into storage.

Those are a just standard relay. Ground one small wire. Apply 12 volts to the other one. The grids will apply.

Why wont it fire without the grid heaters?? Mine has been MIA for years, never had a problem with cold starts less than 30deg. Is your timing advanced much?

Either way you would need to jump out the grid heater relay.

Probably could have got it to fire if I'd been boosting it to get it rolling a little faster/longer, but the battery started to Peter out after 20 seconds of cranking, at Minus 28 Celsius. It started to fire after 15 seconds of cranking, but couldn't build heat fast enough in the combustion chambers. This is also with 5w40 snythetic, an almost new starter, and brand new 860 CCA battery fully charged at room temp before attempting morning start. Just . Bloody. Cold. Get spinning fast/long enough they'll build their own heat and fire without intake heater assistance. If it wasn't parked on the street it'd be plugged in and it wouldn't be an issue lol. It'd probably fire right up today being at least 15 degrees warmer out. Lot warmer than being the 6th coldest place on the planet less than 2 weeks ago lol.
