Cracked head?

Postby JQmile » Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:30 pm

SO since I have an '89, with the 9mm injector bores, how bad do I have to worry about my head cracking? I heard it can happen but not sure if it is a one in 500 or one in 5 type of thing. I've also heard that even if they do crack, they can still be run most of the time...?.....[/u]

As long as your fluids stay where they belong, and you have no compression leaks, I'd say you'd be ok. I had 6 cracks in my 91 head, and ran it. Machine shop said he'd seen them run in Case tractors with much bigger cracks. The tractors have a lot heavier duty cycle than a pickup, so I went ahead adn used it with no ill effects for the next 70K.

I'm not sure how common the cracks are. I've heard of them being fairly common, though.

As for as a % gos.......I will GUESS and say 50% would have a crack by the time you need to replace a head gasket........and 2% would not be worthy of being put back in survice.
