Bio-Diesel

Postby GHarman » Sun Mar 16, 2008 3:26 am

Just tried my first mixed fuel fillup. So far it starts without any blockheater warmup. It has not been really that cold this year, however, it will be a while before the ground thaws and the snow is gone. Diesel has recently broke $4.00 a gallon with bio-diesel only a few cents cheaper. 'Cept for the increased lubricity of the bio, I see no advantage on the short term. Will continue to use the mixed fuel for now. It is not widely available with the nearest retailer more than 30 miles (one way) away. GregH

What are you mixing? WVO and diesel? If so at least get all the water out of it so the glycerin doesn't end up setting up in yourr injectors when it cools. Most cost effective way I found was an old electric water heater/ 4hrs @ 160*/ Then gravity out into a clean tank through a BIG clear water/fuel seperator. This way you can keep an eye on it.

I wasn't sure, I may have mis read. Most guys buy B-5, 10, 20 etc. They don't have to mix their own unless you're toalking WVO.

wvo and svo can be turned into biodiesel by seperating theout the glycerin by adding lye at the right time .

if biodiesel is made properly there should be no difference between it and regular diesel .

Other than viscosity at a given temp.

the viscosity should be very similar .

when the lye is added , the molcule chains that make up wvo or svo , are broken to to similar lengthens .

I have been running B-20 for almost 3 years now. There are several places in my area that sell it.

I have even run B-99 with no problems. I live in the Seattle area and we see temp below freezing from time to time.

I would suggest that you replace your filter after 1,000 miles of running Bio for the first time as it tends to break loose build up from #2 on the tank linning and fuel system.

I removed mine a few years ago and found what looked like a green slime build up.

After the second filter I have very little in my filters and now change my filter on its normal shcedule.

A friend that is an OTR owner operator suggested using Howe's additive. He says it gels up at a higher temp than regular diesel. I mix 4 tanks out of a gallon.

I am wondering about MPG's with it. The best I have had so far was 17.8. I recently got 20 with almost straight ULSD.

Anyone have any mileage info? It is a hassle to buy the bio as the only 2 places near me are in bad neighborhoods, and I can't pay at the pump. One place won't even hold your card or driver's license so you can top it off. :mad:

I also have a problem buying from either of them.........

Shell=Arab oil

Citgo=Hugo Chavez.

Flying J is no bio, and no Arab oil.

WVO? What is that pure veggie? Around here we can get up to 20% soy.

Yep. You can't buy it, you have to do the work yourself. You basically have to have a seperate fuel system to run it. It's got to stay hot and clean. You still need #2 to start it and shut it down. But in between you're running on fuel you can get for free.
