Headgasket trouble

Postby pulltilbroke » Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:19 pm

today I noticed the hg was leaking down the side of the block checked to see if their was water in oil and vice versa looked good
Just wondering if I retorque head to 125 and turn the pump down a bit if it will be ok til I get a gasket

Drove it 20 miles home after i noticed it, topped off the rad, and kept boost under 10 and it didnt leak all the way home

BTW truck runs fine no unusaual smoke and the gasket is only 1 year old

Were the head and block perfectly flat?
What did you originally torque the bolts to when installed?
Have you done any retorques?

The head was flat, I torqued it to 95 and have never retorqued it

The bolts also passed the ring test and were in spec on the stretch gage

The book calls for 93ft-lbs (or thereabouts), then another 90deg. Or, you can go to 125ft-lbs on all of them as a final step. That way, you KNOW they are all evenly torqued. Joe Donnelley has noticed that the torque + angle method isnt always consistent in end torque on the bolts.

I'd bet that is part of your problem.

Don't do torque turn on the early trucks. The early FSM says to torque only. We did torque turn on Greg's truck, and I think that helped stretch his bolts. The later bolts are beefier.
I would do a retorque and try it. Nothing to lose! ;-)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I'll have to double check, but I think my 90 FSM/ diesel supplement says torque plus angle. I think that is how I did my 91.
