whats the deal???

Postby 92 D/UNIT » Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:26 pm

today i was driving about 35-40 and let off the skinny pedal and the engine rpms stayed where they were. so i stopped thinking that my fuel screw was turned in to far and backed it out a turn, didnt do it for a while then started doing it again so i drove it back to the shop and turned the screw back till it idled down pretty low, checked linkage, started on my way home got on the highway pretty hard and the thing died, restarted and gave it some throttle and it did it again. got movin down the highway about 75 and let off the throttle and the rpms stayed at 1800 then slowly started to decrease. it seems to be fine under 1600 rpm on the highway but anything more and it acts like its going to run away if i push in the clutch. the full power screw is way back from the where it normally is. can anybody give me some things to check?

wtf, my truck started doing something similar. It did it a few days earlier this week. I would push the clutch in and it would hold rpm, or I would be accelerating and the throttle would stick. I found that I could pull the pedal back up with the edge of my foot. Always gets your attention when you let off the throttle and it keeps going on its own...

Linkage/cable freeze? Had that happen once on a Chevy...go pedal mashed, top of the hill where the temps were colder and the linkage froze...from ice not rust. Mashed it a couple of times and it freed up...just before my tighty whiteys got soiled.

I would make sure you linkage is not binding up. Have someone throttle the foot pedal in the cab while you watch from under the hood. Then make sure you don't have a floor mat or something touching the throttle not allowing it to return to no throttle.

Check your battery grounds. Mostly the body grounds. The throttle cable has a plastic liner. If you are loosing a ground. The ground can go threw the cable and melt the liner causing the throttle cable to stick.

I have seen this many times on older chevy pickups.

put on a new fuel filter on dec 9th probably has about 3000 mi. of use. so a plugged or dirty fuel filter will cause an engine to act like this? explain.

For some reason when a rotary pump is running out of fuel they idle up just before they quit. I think the lack of fuel around the gov as its running out causes the gov to act funny since it nolonger has the resistance of the fuel. It may very well not be your problem but its a cheap under $10 fix if it is. We have seen many problems with plugged filters from the new ulsd fuel. Many refiners around here have been mixing biodiesel to add lubricity to the fuel, but biodiesel cleans the funk out of old diesel systems so until its been run several tanks it plugs alot of filters. Possibly not your problem, but a good place to start since you are shure its not the linkages.

The cable could be freezing due to moisture inside, have heard a lot of that lately.

ALso check to see that the middle of the pedal lever assembly isnt hanging up on the pivot piece. Mom's does this every once in a while, and I get a phone call that evening- "Daniel, my truck is acting up again." Fortunately, from this, TDR, and DTR sites, I can nromally diagnose it over the phone.

KTA- where you getting fuel filters for under $10? NAPA kooks want $17 for a fuel filter here. "I'll just keep the filter on there a while longer."

DP, Cummins, Fleetguard distributor, Scheid Diesel, fs1232 can be had for $9ish. Find a Baldwin distributor and get it about $8ish. Wipe your Chris Hughes with Napa Wix filters:eek:.
