How the engine works

Greenleaf contacted me and cannot get a reply in here for some reason. I'll relay his comments on this one.

The following is a cut and paste of what Scott wrote; "I did not locate the given pump Bosch or Cummins pump number. I found his CPL and there is nothing there to indicate it used the given pump number(s)

The pump may work, however the governing may be different. Industrial used variable speed and automotive use a combination of variable and limiting speed governor. We need to know what the engine was removed from and the model year.

I don't know about installing the afc top. That may work out. It's the reverse lever that operates off of the tensioning lever. If the top of the tensioning lever is the same he will bo good there. The vent for the pump in on the AFC and the other pump he has will have a vent in a different location.

I have a "built from pump". However, its not just the last three pump numbers that are different. That is generally the rule. (First seven number must match) Mine is a 4 cylinder pump made into a six cylinder unit."

fuel rate 66.7 mm 3/stroke

This got me to thinking......so I checked my truck and it told me 160 HP @ 7.8mm/stroke :shock: So help me it does. So I thought I'd look at another and it's 190 HP @ 97mm3/stroke. No wonder my truck achieves such good economy. :?

I'm going to have to look into this again. Anyone have the tag available from another first gen engine? What is the fuel rate @ adv. HP/Speed?

is the rate on the pumps not applicable once you start turning the screw?or is it something inside that changes the fuel rate? also mine says 74 but i think the pump has been replaced.

Right. Once you begin to alter the pump, the engine tag is null and void, save for the CPL and serial number. You change the CPL when you alter the injectors/turbo/swap injection pumps etc. etc. from OEM

The only thing you cannot change is the serial number, unless you build and engine from two or three units.

He was probably still up doing research for us. :roll:

NonIC trucks CPL 804- 78mm/stroke 160hp@2500rpm
IC'd trucks CPL 1351 & 1579- 74mm/stroke 160hp@ 2500rpm

That IS cubic millimeters, i.e. 1/1000th of a cc/mL;

So, the cooler air and retarded timing made for the same power with an intercooler.
