Advancing the timing on a '93 VE pump Cummins.

Postby outlaw5.9 » Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:37 pm

I plan on installing a set of POD's. I need detailed instructions on how to advance the timing. I may need to advance it before the installation of the injectors. The truck seems to have a miss. Predominantly at higher RMP levels. I have already checked the KSB solenoid and replaced the fuel filter. The miss is probably cauased by the need to replace the injectors.

i made a index mark on the pump and the gear cover loosened the three pump bolts 13mm(you need a to customize a wrench or buy a s wrench snap on makes one but dont know the p/n) and the 10mm at the back of the pump. and rotated towards intake manifold /head. big channel locks, rachet strap or bottle jack (dont laugh) work good for rotating the pump. as far as how much?? not sure but my afc diaphram is about a 1/2 inch away from intake. with pods
some say to loosen fuel lines but ive never did it. after the first time you can do it in about 10 min.

Harbor Freight sells the metric 'S' wrenches cheeep, sometimes on sale! Junk, but you don't use them much so they're okay.

I have a craftsman 1/2in crowsfoot socket I use for the nuts behind the pump. I never could get a socket on the higher nut behind the pump.

If you loosen the fuel lines, you reduce the strain on them. IF you twist them+vibration= cracked line!

It really does take that much force? because I loosened all my nuts on the pump and it wouldn't move, so i lightly tapped it with a brass hammer, but it still didn't move.. so i just gave up... looks like ima have to try this again, but be more forceful..

Yes, sometimes it can be a beatch! I put a 2x4 in there and pried my guts out! The BIG channel locks is a good idea, grab the head of the pump and twist. Make sure you have a wrench right there to tighten with!

Just curious, but anybody know WHY the pump is so stinkin hard to turn? Doesn't seem right that it would have to be...?

Yeah, okay, they're pretty stout so I see it would take some moxie to bend 7 at once!

Make sure you loosened the 10mm bolt under the pump on the rear bracket. It will not turn if it is tight. Mine moves easy with all four bolts loose.

The injector line clamps can also make it hard to move.

rlyons is right; they can be a PITA to move if you leave the one bolt unloosened.

I don't get it.

First we say to be careful not to bend the fuel lines, but then we say that the pump is hard to bend because of the fuel lines?

Is there a way to take off the fuel lines so you don't have to bend them to rotate the pump?

It's OK to flex the fuel lines, just don't bend them. You don't want to push them hard enough that they don't spring back. Make sense?

So after you rotate the pump, the lines have more tension on them then they did before hand?
