Fuel PSI Gauge

Postby DALEDOZER » Mon Feb 12, 2007 4:51 pm

Got a fuel psi gauge, and a "install kit" which had some fittings and a length of tubing. The tubing is the same as what came with my boost gauge, pretty much a small air line, don't know the size off the top of my head. Is this OK to use for a fuel psi gauge, or do I need to run a larger line? I do have it on the truck now and it seems to be working fine other than it does not seem to react to the pressure changes very fast.
One more thing, I am running 5 psi at idle with the stock diaphram pump,
this sound right? and zero when gettin on her, I know thats no good.

Air line! Yeah, that's the same stuff I got on mine. Did you use an isolater? 5 psi at idle is ok, sounds like a piston pump upgrade is coming! Mine reacts real fast, do you have a needle valve on the engine end? Most guys, me included, use that to choke it down and take out the pulses. Truck still shut off?

No isolator, does not pulse, just slowly moves back and forth. I dont know about this needle your talkin bout :? I am supposed to get the rest of my parts for the piston pump upgrade tommorrow from cummins, already have the pump, and yes she still is shuttin off good. I put a second gen intake horn on over the weekend, seems to spool much better. Huge restriction, could not believe how narrow the opening is.(on the 1 gen.)

Send it all back if you bought mechanical. This is if you want a permanent FPG. If permanent, the best route is a Westach electric FPG. 0-30psi.

If temporary to periodically check FP, then a mechanical is ok. I like to use a 30psi boost gauge. Pressure is pressure btw.

Our mechanical lift pumps love to kill mechanical FPG's. Slowly the gauge will start to tick, sway, then go crazy, bouncing from 0 to 30 like wiper blades. BTDT. Especially with the big bad piston pump. Some guys have gotten away by using a snubber or needle valve barely cracked open.

That boost tubing worked for me in the past til I got the Westach electric gauge. Then a section of grease hose, I'm sure can be ordered with the gauge from Geno's or comes with it. Or I used a section of hydraulic hose with 1/8npt male/female ends to hook up at the tapped banjo bolt, and the Westach sender.

Hey thanks for the great news Bill :D . It's pretty much all mounted and paid for now, guess I'll just wing it. Will this be accurate just to get some readings pre and post lift pump install?

Yes it will be accurate for awhile. Get a snubber (don't know where you get one of these, nor do I know what they look like), and get a 1/8npt needle valve available at a hardware store or fitting/hose shop. Time to do some plumbing if you want that gauge to last. You didn't get it from PDR did ya  ?

If you put in a needle valve, you can shut it off if you have a problem. I got mine at Graingers. Blacksheep4x4 on TDR has gauges and stuff, an isolater is about $60 from him. It keeps fuel out of the cab, goes in between on the line, fill w/ antifreeze on gauge side. I just put a sleeve over my line, sloping down hill.

A year and a half later, my $10 mechanical gauge still works. I have a snubber on it, though.

Needle valve-check, snubber-check. Every thing is as clear as mud now. :? Bill, got my Isspro gauge locally for $35-$40. Was hoping to keep all my gauges matching.

Jeez! :o 6MN31, 1/8 inch needle valve. It's like, $6 or $7. Male on one end, female on the other. It screws into the banjo, then your adapter screws into it.
Next you'll want me to do it for ya!

How bout you just mail me one already installed in a banjo bolt? Put my lift pump in last night, 15 psi! Makes me feel better. Now I am ready for a 14mm head, can you send that with the needle valve and banjo bolt?
Thanks again Pete, maybe I will by you a shot or two of yagermiester at SOP.
