pushrods

Postby EARLBURNER » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:41 am

I was tearing my 89 non ic cummins down this weekend and found that most of my pushrods on the intake side were bent. The exhaust side looks fine. What would cause this?

Bet its a 5 speed.... the cause is most likely engine over speed.

There is a ton of clearance in these motors stock, more than enough that you shouldn't bend any pushrods. Sounds like the camshaft was out of time. Sheared keys, broken gears, missing teeth, somebody installed it wrong?

mine were ever so slightly bent too. i was because im sure the truck hasn't had a valve adjustment since the truck was new, plus a bit of over revving.

I had two pushrods that wouldn't spin 360 degrees and one that rubbed a groove in the inspection plate. The engine was mated with a 727. Will be mated with a 5 speed now. It came out of an 84 quad cab 2wd dually chevy, so I have no idea of the history of this engine. All gears on the front of the engine are in good shape (oil pump, idler, crankshaft, cam, injection pump gears) . Im buying all new pushrods hopefully to remedy all my problem. excessive rpms.... how fast is too fast to spin the engine... must be over 3200????

Seems to me like the aftermarket pushrods get used to prevent these problems.

Interesting. I have a p-pumped pulling motor that turns over 4500rpms everytime down the track, runs about 50psi, a very aggressive cam and still has the factory stock pushrods from back in 1995 200,000 miles ago. It must be because it has good valve springs that it has survived. Old yellow also has stock pushrods and runs 70+psi and turns 4200rpm or so, but it has good springs too.

I believe there are several manufacturers.

Seems like some engines like to bend them at high RPM and some don't. But considering that there is a lot of guys making, selling and running them, it leads me to think there's something to them.

What valve springs do you consider "good"?

No, I've never heard anybody recommend them for a 3200 RPM engine..

Something to think about I almost bought HD frozen reheated tempered push rods cuz I didnt want to bend a rod in my puller but a man steered me away from it when he got me thinkin about what else would break if my pushrod didnt.....its easy and fairly cheap to replace a push rod or two its not so cheap when you have to get the head sent off and a new valve job done on it or valve hitting the piston etc. whatever the case maybe I believe it could cost you in the long run just a thought

We got the OE replacement push rods for earlburners motor put in yesterday, can some one tell me the torque specs and sequence for the Big and Little bolt on the rocker Arm support? As I assume the big one is one of the head bolts. Thanks guys.

Any ones that are not worn out, to start with. 60# better, last longer before worn out to the point of leading to things like bent pushrods.
