N/I timing options?

Postby Fnschlaud4620 » Mon Feb 19, 2007 8:32 pm

So after I have read some back posts I believe that I have my ksb solinoid wired incorrectly, considering I have a 91 N/I engine and I wired it using a 93 service manual. I now know that I have to supply power to the KSB otherwise it has the timing advanced.

My question is what should I do? let the KSB advance the timing or power it and bump the pump 1/8?

How many degrees does the ksb advance?

I read on tdr that the I/C pumps come withe more timing from the factory, so does this mean I can bump a N/I pump 3/16"?

Thank you in advance

The non charge air cooler trucks are set up with more advanced timing than the charge air equipped trucks.

I keep a power wire on my ksb and advanced it a very small amount. The later model truck I have no KSB power and advanced it a pretty fiar amount. Primarily due to the higher pop injectors. Neither of my trucks use the KSB.

I hope you got all that. I had trouble writing it  You can advance pump time and use/not use the KSB to your likeing....everyone has a different approach.

The KSB can also be eliminated from the pump. You'll need some bosch pump parts to do that. Not all the pumps use the KSB. It's a automotive thing. Like the fuel heater. Or the WIF sensor. etc.etc.etc.

I wouldn't use the KSB as a permanent form of timing advance. Run a wire from the shutdown solenoid to the KSB. If white smoke when cold bothers you, add a switch to the dash or find a thermo switch you can put in the intake or the water jacket.

Thanks for the replys guys,

I now am going to run a power wire to the KSB, from the shutdown solenoid as Wannadiesel says,

So then, greenleaf says to only to advance it a little,

How much? 1/8, 1/16, 1/32?

thanks guys

You can advance all you like, however the head gasket integrity will be the factor. If you upgrade the gasket and the head bolts to studs you will have no problem. However, the 9mil heads are not something you want to operate with a heavy load of boost and cyl temps, so if you upgrade the gasket, upgrade the cyl head.

Things get expensive quick. You you really need a 12 or 13 second truck?

It's called pay to play and the financial burden will decide.

I ran my old 91 with the infamous cracks, and for the 70K I had it after the head gasket update, it kept the fluids where they belonged. I just have gotten into the habit of keeping my boost under 40psi, and the EGT under 1400, and so far so good.

I'd say if your EGT is decent to good, and you like the power, leave the timing alone. Some guys have had actual drops in performance by advancing to much. Sometimes stock isnt all that bad. Sometimes it is, though.
