pull injectors

Postby Redneckintraining » Sun Apr 19, 2009 4:42 pm

I need to pull the injectors on my 89 W250 to get them cleaned and pop tested.the lines dont look hard to pull but how do I undo the big nut that holds the injectors in place?

thanks in advance.

Pull the lines and use a deep well socket. Most of the time they'll pop right loose. If it feels funny, switch to a wrench and see if the whole injector is turning. If so, you'll have to try to hold it with a wrench on the flats of the injector. Spray lots of Blaster or some such will help too.

-24mm on the injector hold down nut
-a nice crisp, good quality crescent on the injector body to hold it from rotating

Cummins makes a slide hammer to pull them to the toon of about $120. Snap-on makes an adapter that threadt on the injector body that attaches to there small slide hammer, but the adapter is around $38 and the slide hammer is around $90.

I had a stuck injector when I did my swap and had to build a slide hammer using a top nut off of a spare set of injector lines, some small rod and a piece of a 2" hyd. cyl. shaft. Cummins never got the #6 stick seated on the crush washer in my motor, so the body was fully incased in carbon. And to boot it was the #6 hole, so I had to pull the hood to get a streight shot at it.

Also, once you pull the retaining nut, lightly smach the injector with a brass drift down where it enters the head. This will help bust loose any carbon buildup there may be. ;)

Does anyone know what the thread size is on the injector body?
I have a slide hammer, all I need is an adapter.

The snap-on adapter is a good tool to have because it has a swivel in the middle and 8mm threads on the top. So with a litthe work it can be adapted to anything. 8) If not, check a few local diesel shops to see if they have a used injector line nut you can have. You will be surprised.

p.s. the cummins slide hammer is quite small because it doesn't take much. Be carfull not to damage the injector with a larger tool. ;-)

I have a slide hammer that I use and what we have done is take an old injector line and take the nut off the end and weld it to a nut that fits your slide hammer I have made this both for the first gen and for the sec. gen injectors hasnt failed yet the slide hammer can be bought for 45.00 it is a OTC tool built for Ford injectors

Some guys use metric lug nuts and weld it to the correct size to adapt to the slide hammer. Cheaper than any of those adapters! ;)

This is what I did. I used a lug nut and welded it to I think 1/2" allthread and couldn't fit 3/4" pipe over the injector so I used 1" pipe and 2 washers and welded a nut on top with a nut in between just like the pics. In 15 min including making the tool the injectors were out, very simple. http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/ ... p?t=124728

I used some 5/8 all thread some 1 1/2 pipe and a lug nut, cut the allthread to about 8" long, cut the pipe to 6 or so inches welded a washer to the top of the pipe and whala you have a 5 dollar injector puller/slide hammer

Went and had the injectors pulled and tested.

they were all carboned up and were "pissy" that and they all poped about 600 psi less than what they where supposed to. new injectors are 365 for the set...expensive right now, but actually having something resembling fuel economy and power will be nice.

$365 aint bad for the set, and you will have plenty of growing room with the nonIC stockers. Get the injectors back to where they should be, and you will be amazed at the difference.
