Dipstick tube-911

Postby PToombs » Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:54 am

Well, I was going to take the Green Machine out for the maiden voyage with the new clutch, and I went to check the oil. When I pushed the dipstick back in it felt funny and wouldn't go. So I looked a little, pulled the tube out, and after pulling the starter out found that the adapter tube that goes in the block broke right there.
Is there any way to get that piece out with out pulling the pan? There's no way to pull the pan with out pulling the engine or dropping the crossmember. I looked it all over pretty good. I did wonder about unbolting the pan and twisting it sideways enough to drive the piece out. Anybody done this?

Next question, Dodge dealer, Cummins, or a used one? Anybody have a good used one they wanna get rid of quick?
Thanks guys, I was more than a little pissed about this, I wanted to go for a ride!

is it like any other dipstick tube where the end that goes into the block is smaller than the main tube outside of the block ?

is there any bit of the tube sticking outside of the block ? , even a tiny bit?

i'm wondering if a guy could either grease up a tap ( grease is used to hold the shavings ) thread the inside of the tube , then run a bolt into it and pull it out .......

hell the tap might even be enough to pull it out .....

or even use a wirefeed to tack weld a bolt to the edge of the tube and pull it out .

Well, I got the part. I remembered my buddy had a 4bt block so I went over and checked it. It had the plastic tube and the correct piece for the block. I got the broken part out of my plastic, but the block is proving to be a little resistant. I had to get a socket for my tap because there is no room for a tap handle in there.
Tomorrow is another day.

:bh: :finger:

I was looking at the spot where the tube broke, and it's not rusted at all. It just broke clean where the hump is in it. Weird. I wonder why?

I got it! I had it done and back together by noon, with a 10am start. Thanks to burnt servo. ;) I never would have thought that the threads would hold in there. I used a 5/16 tap and greased the hole and the tap, then ran it in the full length. I then put in a bolt that had threads the same length as the tap. The bolt stuck out about a 1/2 inch. I put a bar under it with a socket for a spacer and it pulled right out.

I got to go for a ride! Man, I needed that!
