Possible VE issues?

Postby MMeier » Tue Apr 28, 2009 5:18 pm

Truck has been smoking more then usual lately, most noticable at idle, mostly bluish black. Seems to be getting worse, appears to run like it always has, MPG the same... any ideas,, bad LP? Rig has 166k on it.

When was the last time you had the injectors rebuilt.

Should do them every 100,000. The springs end up getting soft and letting extra fuel into engine especially at idle when there is no boost.

Do you have stock injectors or upgraded?

Has the smoke/ haze started since you got the new injectors installed, or did it start about the same time? Reason I ask is, that if they werent automotive injectors, that could be your problem- piston bowl and injector spray not matched.

Another possibility is an air restriction (air filter, CAC hose, etc), or fuel restriction. Believe it or not, I LOST SMOKE with a piston lift pump upgrade- probably 2/3 of what I had before.

Piston lift pump usually does not change much.

I am running the PODs and because of the spray angle i get the smokey idle.
First off back the smoke screw on top of the LDA off and see if that clears up then try to readjust the star wheel.

I am running POD'S and i almost have no smoke at idle still running the stock lift pump.

I sprayed around all the intake parts I could... air filter, connections, manifold, intake horn, tight as can be. :? I did turn the smoke screw in 1/4 turn, still the same smoke, just lower idle, before I turned it in, everything was normal.. idle speed, EGT at idle, etc. 2 tanks ago, I did throw 3.5 qts of WMO in the tank... what are the chances it took 1.5 tanks or so, to start getting burned? Never happened before when I've done this... darn truck seems to run like it always has.

Try backing the smoke screw out. The more you have it turned in the more it will engage the fule pin.

With my PODs i have the smoke screw almost all the way out to keep it from smoking so much.

Back it out much more and I'll have to turn the idle up... why would this start all of a sudden is what I want to know! :? Going to beat on it some more tonite and see if it does anything different.

No the smoke screw (located on top of the LDA) does not change your idle.

The max fuel screw ( located on the rear of the pump) however will.

The smoke screw is located on the cover that is on top of the fuel pin.

My mistake, I was talking about the max fuel screw... even so, it didnot smoke this bad even when I had my PODs in before and up untilo this event was relatively smoke free.... :?

Hmmmm... wondering now... is it possible something is stuck or hung up relating to the pin or the diaphragm above it?

Everything looked OK in there, took a bunch of fuel out of the pump and just beat on it for 135 miles. Tank is almost empty now, will probably fill it tomorrow night and see what happens... and put the fuel back to it, 15 # of boost kinda sucks !
