Fuel pump shut off solenoid problems...

Postby chico_mustangs » Sun May 10, 2009 11:53 pm

So last week my 93 cummins 12v wouldn't shut off, we narrowed it down to the shut off solenoid. I removed the factory Solenoid and the plunger had chunks missing from it so I went to my local Napa and purchased a new one, not a bosch like the OE, a napa brand unit. So tonight, under 1 week after I installed the new solenoid with plunger sure enough the damn thing wouldn't shut off again! I suffocated it and got her to shut down... I removed the solenoid and sure enough the same thing happened again! So any ideas on what could be making this happen? Could it just be that I got a defective one? Could it be possible that their is crap in my fuel tank thats trying to get shoved through there is tearing the new plunger? I just replaced my fuel filter about a week before the first one went out. Any help that anyone could give me would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!!!

No idea why it keeps failing, but I thought I would tell you that there is a spring loaded lever on your pump that will shut it down manually, instead of blocking off the air to the engine.

I doubt it could be crap in the fuel getting that far.

Have read that high vouume of fuel pushed by a really turned up pump can cause it. Maybe a quality issue in the replacement. There are some pump experts here who will nodoubt reply.

Some folks have removed the plunger part and use just the shutdown lever. Seems like a good way to go. My pump has no shutoff or I would go that way.

When i read of chunks comming off the plunger I wonder where the chunks get to in the pump.

The delivery valves and/or return screen will eventualy clog. It won't be long before the VE is toast if you keep doing that.

This might sound dumb to you guys but I'm new to diesels, where is the shutdown lever or spring? I would rather just do away with the shut off solenoid and use the lever.

Thanks!!!

It's on the side of the injection pump.

It's below the AFC on the fender side of the pump. Lever about 3" long.

The plunger chips because you have the fuel screw in a lot and are running stock or small injectors. When you let off quick, the backwash from the sudden deceleration chips the plunger. If you have larger injectors or let off slower this won't happen. ;)

I just said it was larger, you're the one that's making a big deal about it. Not having a "little" inadequacy complex, are you?
