pump leak HELP!

Postby 1dumrednek » Wed May 27, 2009 4:54 pm

just got home from work, hopped out of the truck and could smell raw fuel( more than usual) i know it's had a small leak for a while but i could never find it. i started really looking today and the fuel is seeping out between the pump head and the pump case. what the heck is wrong?!? :?

You done blowed the o-ring that seals the head. Time for a gasket kit! ;-)

If its the plug right next to the fuel inlet you have to pull the pump.

it looks like what pete said. cuz it's coming out from the crack between the head and pump. just kinda seeps and bubbles out of there. and i imagine i've been driving it like this for quite a while so will it hurt anything to keep driving it till i fix it? it's my only ride.

Gently try to tighten the bolts that hold the head on. This works once in a while. I'm not sure if you can loosen the bolts and fish the old one out, then the new one in or not.
You can drive it, but it's gonna be messy!

I'm saying I think you can do it like that. I've never had the head off one. I thought somebody else who has done it would chime in by now.

If you are very skilled and very coordinated, you can, theoretically, R&R the pump head seal without removing the pump from the engine. I'd not reccomend it- I normally have to take a few tries at it with the pump on a bench, DVs pointed up to keep stuff from falling out of place. I cant imagine doing it on the engine.

I still have this same problem. I just stopped driving the truck but I really need to fix it. I know to pull the pump calls for some special tools. What do I REALLY need? I added up the price of the tools in the Dodge service video on pulling the pump and it came up to almost $200. Work is a little slow for me right now so money is tight.

All you really need (unique) is a 13mm wrench with a kink in it.

A half-moon wrench would do. A lot of people bend up a cheap wrench with a torch.

You also need the puller to pop the gear off. Nothing fancy. Just a plate with 2 holes in it for the bolts. The holes just have to be spaced right to hit the holes in the gear.
I was on a job once to swap a pump on a machine, and the puller I had was too big to fit. I grabbed a piece of scrap 1/2" steel from the dumpster cut it in a circle, and cut a slot on each side for the bolts. Very crude, but worked great! I still have it. Some day I might even grind the slag off the sides of it. ;)

so the guy at pa diesel did tho o-ring in the head, and the throttle shaft cuz i guess it was worn too. he said the bolts on the head were loose too. so he got it all back together and put it on the test bench to try it out. still leaking. MY PUMP CASING IS CRACKED!!! He said in 20 years of fixing pumps he has never seen that happen. in february i had to replace the afc housing cuz it cracked and now this. frick my luck.

I'll sell you the pump off of my 93 for $400.00.It has 400 000 kms on it but it works good, doesn't leak. You'd have to bring the tools though.I also got a 250 cc @ 3200 rpm rebuilt from Industrial Injection still in the box,but I won't take less than 1400 for that one.I live just down the road from you.
