Engine Oil

Postby Farmboy » Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:03 am

Very dumb question, but I don't have a manual for this truck... what weight of oil and how much oil do these motors take? I need to change my oil. I haven't done it since I bought the truck yet so I think it would be a good idea. Probably should have done it sooner but didn't have time.

Above 10 degrees f, it calls for 15w40. If colder than that, it wants 10w30, and if its below 0 with no block heater it calls for 5w30 synthetic, with block heater is 10w30. Mine takes just over 13 quarts to fill up. I use the valvoline blue 15w40.

Or you can use a 5w/40 and not worry about the temperature. Just make sure it is a minimum CI4+ diesel-rated oil - no gasser oil.

my dad has a '98 and '99 cummins , my sister has a ' 89 jetta diesel , and my '91 jetta all run 0w-40 all year round ( we buy it by the 5 gallon pail )

with my vw i noticed a definate improvement in fuel consumption with the lighter oil .

once i finish my '93 dodge , i intend to put it on the same diet .

Thanks guys. It ended up taking 13 qt. Now.... how often do you change the oil. My dad said probably 5-6 thousand miles. What do you think.
