safe boost?

Postby Fnschlaud4620 » Mon Mar 12, 2007 6:21 pm

So what do you guys think is a safe boost pressure for the non-intercooled headgasket?

I have the 5x.014 injectors in and the twins done, but I need a break from building and I want to drive my truck this summer.

I have a feeling the HT60 will just be along for the ride for a while!

Stock pump
stock timing
no intercooler

thanks

I have been running a hx40 40-45 psi with 370s and I now have coolant in the #6 cylinder, torqued head to 110ft lbs hoping that will hold till I can get the head O ringed. I just installed the 435s the other day, have you ran yours yet?

yes I have ran it but not driven, I am impressed that I have little to no idle smoke, but that is due to a stock injection pump I am sure. I am happy so far, they will smoke a little grey with a snap throttle and no load, I feel quite confident that they will roll black with a good load on the engine.

I've always heard that 40-45 PSI was the safe level; guess that isn't quite accurate...

45psi is pushing it, I had a few headbolts that were not quite as tight as others on the outside corners of the head, and I think the retorque might get me by.

I've been running 40 for over a year now. It may of been more with the old turbo but I only had a 30lb guage. It's still holding fine.

I have 3 pressure relief valves that open @ 50psi. This was the lowest I could find.

I am worried about the ht60 making more than 40 lbs, besides my foot how can I control the unwastgeted ht60 to only make 40lbs for now?

Do I control it with fuel?

If the 435s can take it past 40lbs with a stock pump can I detune a stock pump?

where do I set the wastegate on the H1C?

12cm wg turbine housing wastgate opened to 1 1/8 and 15/16 hole in divider

H1E compressor housing off 8.3 cummins no MWE

Stock HT60 with 28 cm turbine housing

My twins may not be the very best but it sure was cheap!

If you'd like to stay at around 50psi, each charger should be operating at a pressure ratio of about 2.1. This would give you about 50psi after the secondary, and each compressor would be in (if not slightly below) it's map. A pressure ratio of 2.1 is only 16.2psi though, and without changing the wastegate actuator, I don't think you'll be able to adjust it that low.

I'd try it set at whatever the wastegate actuator normally opens at (probably right around 20psi).

I don't think that the primary will make more then about 15 to 20 psi. The trick is to keep the secondary down. I have seen a thread on cummins forum about cutting the divider out in the exhaust housing and installing a bigger wastegate puck. He was able to keep it around 45-50 psi and said it performed awsome.
