Oil In The Coolant, No Oil In The Engine....

Postby 91dodgecummins12v » Wed Jun 24, 2009 10:23 am

hey guys, just wanted to check a few different places and make sure that im checking the right thing before i start tearing into my truck. got a 1991.5 intercooled dodge 12 valve and i got oil in my coolant. buddy at cummins said that it could be 1 of 2 things. blown head gasket (truck is stock) or faulty oil cooler. just wanted to see what you guys thought. thanks!

Also, the truck does not smoke at all, whatsoever. no white, just the regular amount of black....

Oil in coolant usually means time for a new headgasket.

By the way, your truck can't be stock. Not if it blows black smoke at least...

Good luck. Take it out and do a pressure test under water and that will tell you. I have heard of people finding a bad cooler and then find out the gasket is bad also.

I have a question that goes along with this for somebody smarter then me. ( doesn't take much ). If the cooler was bad it would leak oil into the coolant while the engine was running due to the oil pressure being more then the coolant pressure. Wouldn't the coolant then get into the oil after you shut the truck off? The cooling system has 10 to 15 psi for a while after you shut down.

My bet is on oil cooler.

How much oil are you seeing in the coolant?

90 % of my oil was in the rad and overflow, the coolant was forced out everywhere onto my truck... the cooler has a tiny hole right where the brazing is. taking it to a shop to get re brazed tomorrow. and off to cummins to get a new oil cooler gasket as well.

keeping my fingers crossed that this is the problem. seems to make sense though... thanks for your help guys!

A half teaspoon of coarse ground pepper will usually put a stop to most small leaks. The pepper becomes incredibly sticky in hot coolant and seals leaks permanently. This of course won't work in Calgary because it makes the horses sneeze.

My grandfather always did that when he had a leak.

Yeah, I'm sure that pepper will plug up that 60psi hole in the oil cooler in a heartbeat.
A coolant leak might be plugged like that though. They used to use oatmeal in the Model T's. ;)
