I/C on non I/C 89 Ist gen

Postby ontos » Sat Jun 27, 2009 3:27 pm

As info for anyone with a nonI/C
Through the winter I added an I/C to my ist gen. A little more pipeing then I would have liked but Freightliner left me no choice that I could find.
Just did my first real trip and results were pretty good. if this were just a pickup that went unloaded all the time I doubt it would be worth it or necessary, but.....
My 1990 motorhome is over 12,000lbs and then I hang a Chevy Malibu off the rear. I keep pretty good baseline records over time over same roads.. The I/C gave me a steady 100* reduction in EGT at 60 + MPH level ground.
That may not seem like much. The best improvement came on the uphill. Much slower increase in EGT's at pretty close to WOT and I never got to max egt on hills that had always caused me to back off, or downshift near the top.
Boost numbers are down from 15+max to 10+, but better power than before. Maybe a leak but I can't find any, and dosen't seem to be a problem,
Starting is a little different, longer crank time, a puff of black smoke, and a little lighter color smoke in cooler weather. (spool up is not tooo fast) Things to look at but pretty good result over all.
Thanks to folks that helped with suggestions.

Good job Joe! The lower boost number is because the air is cooler and denser, the cfm should be the same, or more.
Start time shouldn't be affected. I've run mine with no turbo on it at all and it started instantly. Not on purpose, but it started!

Pete,
Thanks. I never had the "instant start", but it was quicker. I'm going to change out the Fuel solenoid since I have a new one from Cummins. maybe the 20 year old one is sticking. It was intermittent but now it is every time.
Other than that, drain back of the fuel is what it feels like. Have to explore that. Lift pump is pretty new Cummins and there is A Walbro electric transfer pump.

I didn't want to say "drain back" out loud, but that's what I was thinking. Does the Walbro run constantly? If so, turn on the key, and wait a minute before starting, so the pump can fill everything. See if that helps.

The walbro transfer pump shuts off on pressure, then goes from a steady buzz to a click, click ... My thought is that it takes longer to "fill" the lines.
What are the possible causes of a drain back? Would it be from the injectors back to the VE or VE back to lift pump?
Can the prime lever on the lift pump be in the wrong position?

Thanks any info.

My modesty will only get your beer drunk on you. ;)
There could be an air leak anyplace on the return side or the supply side. Most likely is the fuel heater o-ring. Been a lot of those lately.
The LP lever should be up. It locks into place.

Thanks Pete. No fuel heater on this one. I'll go looking for leaks next rainy day.

yes... sounds like you are sucking air into the fuel system.

That was easy!

Not sure which one of these it was or if I got it all, but 2 not tight fittings on the return line, one on the lift pump, little slack in a banjo bolt.
Starts right up. I do want to check a few more.
How is it these fittings can let air in but don't leak under pressure?
Thanks for the help.

I pretty much drink left over Utica Club, or Genny, not much left under 10 years old. Vintage. One sip is all you need.
Should still probably swap in the new shutoff.
Enjoy the Holiday.
