New Camper Upgrades....Engine PM's

Postby MrWinkey » Sun Jun 28, 2009 7:39 pm

Well I've finally joined the RV club and bought a new camper....2700 dry and 3100 wet weight.

I figured I would do some PM's on the truck and install some gauges.....

So new air bags and rear end bearings......

But for the motor...I need to replace my cracked exhaust manifold....any benifit to use the newer style pulse manifold?

I'm debating about upgrading to a newer HX35 or 40 turbo.....the old WH1C is getting a lil shaft play and needs updating.

I'm going to upgrade to the newer style piston pump....hopefully it will let the VE keep on ticking.

The injectors should most likely be rebuilt or upgraded. Anybody have suggestions?

Thanks in advance

My advise if you plan on it staying together would be to update the turbo to a super HX40 holset or base model S300G borge warner. I would also stay with a mild injector like bosch 190's. A good 4 inch exhaust from turbo back. This should get you to 250 horse at the wheels and still be a reliable, smoke free tow rig. I have 300hp in one and must be close to 300 with the other ( not dynoed that one yet ). They are toys, see few miles every year, and I don't have to worry if they are down because of them being blown up. If I were looking at a dailey driver, tow rig then that is what I would have. :D

Called PDR....

Got a quote for one of their HX35's a new ATS manifold to replace the cracked one and a new set of Bosch 190's.

This truck already has the NV4500 and new clutch.

Everybody still happy w/ the stuff PDR is doing lately?

Thanks!

I wouldn't spend the money on the bosch 190's or a new hx35. I have the 190's and didn't feel like they added anything.

I'd go with some ddp3 injectors and a super 40 turbo.

I have also HEARD good things of the ddp3's. I have no first hand experience with 190's or ddp3's. Just what I have read. I do have a basic s300g on my 89 and it is a great upgrade from stock. Its not huge but it is a good turbo for towing. I have never bought from PDR but don't remember reading any negative feedback. The super HX 40 seems to be a good turbo if you have the fuel to push it. A couple of guys on here have the 40 and like it.

The camper weight is pretty modest. I have a Motorhome that tops 12,000 lbs with a pretty near stock 89 1st gen. The Fuel is turned up and I did the hybrid turbo by putting in a bigger compressor wheel, also a 4" muffler and added an I/C. Not a lot and I can add a car on behind that weighs over 3,000lb . Still goes down the road pretty good.
With that tranny and modest improvements you won't even know that trailer is back there. Have fun.

Thanks!

Basicly I am just thinking of a slight HP improvment but mostly I'm looking for fuel MPG.

The cheapness in me is comming out and I'm debatin about a used HX35 hybrid turbo and a stock manifold w/ a lil porting done to it.

I was looking at the Bosch 190 injectors because I dont need anymore power just a lil more.....mostly I like the good fuel economy.

I don't think you can beat the 190's milage wise. If you are going with those I would not worry much about porting stuff. I think your on the right track for your goals. ;)
