radiator q's

Postby TRENDZ » Mon Jul 13, 2009 9:49 pm

I have an early 91 that needs a radiator. I have bits and pieces of info, but I'd like more detail on how different the intercooled vs non intercooled radiators are. I've found prices on radiators, and it seems the intercooled version is always lower priced.
I have a second gen intercooler that I'll be adding, and it looks like it will fit in the space I have with the current radiator/shroud.
Does anyone have pics or dimentions of the later radiator? Does the early shroud work on the newer radiator? Other than holes for the intercooler, would the core support need to be modified to get the new style radiator to fit?
I've read that the hoses are different. Does the engines water inlet/outlet need any changes to do the swap?
One other question... Should the order of coolers go, condenser, intercooler, radiator? or can the condenser get sandwiched between?

Is was basically mandatory to put the intercooler in front with the AC condensor sandwiched between it and the radiator in order for everything to fit when I did that mod. There was just not enough room in the core support to fit the IC in far enough back to get the condensor in front of it without butchering the grill. I have had no issues with AC performance running it this way, either.

You can get a new IC radiator.

Take your old rad to a shop, and have them mount the old brackets on the new radiator. Swap out the thermostat housings, and install IC'd hoses in your new radiator set up.

Worked in my old nonIC 91. Just make sure when the brackets are mounted, they put the rad far enough forward to clear the fan.
