Ex Valve spring compresor

Postby Rebel Ram » Sun Mar 18, 2007 8:29 am

I am looking to do three projects in one shot today. I will have my injection lines off for a pump swap any way, So I want to install my new 60# springs and I have new Valve cover Gaskets to intall. My question is Does anyone have a good shade tree spring compresion method? I will be rotating the engine to TDC for each cyl and doing them one at a time and adjusting lash. I just don't have THAT tool. Any suggestions?

KD Tool 2078

Postby bgilbert » Mon Mar 19, 2007 2:23 am

Get the tool! KD Tool 2078. IIRC. NAPA about $25. Do the companion cylinder method, that way you can do two cylinders per rev of the crank. Rotate the crank 3 times instead of 6. Companion cyl method is for example when cyl #1 is at TDC, cyl #6 is up too, whatever you call that stroke etc. You can remove the valve spring and the valve will sit ontop the piston for each (#1,#6). I'd have to search or I am just too tired to tell ya which are the other companion cylinders... 2/4, 3/5 maybe.. been a long night.

Thanks for the tip. I'll probably pick up the right tool eventually. But I made a tool yesterday and got it done.

How do you make a valve spring compresser?

I wouldn't think the vice grips and bastard files trick would work on 60 pounders...

Sorry I took so long to post this. Check out the pics on the TDR. I made it from 10 Ga steel. The cut out shape on the left is clearance for the intake valve spring. The relieved edges of the down leg are clearance for different things on each cyl. I used the rocker tower bolt to pull down the brkt . Its not the best but it works.
