best free mods to do to my ve pump

Postby ahale2772 » Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:01 am

i just recently bought a 89 w250 12 valve from a lobsterman in a local town for 750 bucks ! i love the truck but its ratty (painted gunship grey with a paintbrush floors rotted out and fiberglassed by the previous owner 4 inch flex pipe all the way back) sounds great and runs mint the frame is nice still because the guy who had it coverd the frame with vegtable oil to prevent it from rusting....and he ran the truck on a vegtable oil/ diesel mix for years. its an auto with the 3 speed 747 307 gears the truck will make all sorts of smoke if u jump on it and seems to have good power butttttt....i want more...

.....i wanted to see what the safest easiest and most costs effective way to hop up my ve pump to make a little more power and run some of my buddies power chokes into the ground..... thanks

sounds like you got a helluva deal! before you go crazy with the pump, put some gauges in so you dont melt it down. you should be fine with the fuel screw up to the lock collar, but once you remove that you'll need a pyrometer for sure. with that said, here is the good stuff-

yes i was thinking about doing a pyrometer trans temp and another mechanical oil pressure gauge .... along with a stack that i have laying around in my yard thanks for the info

so today i took and found that the previous owner allready had the fuel delivery rate pin turned to about 120 degrees so what i did was turn the spring down about 1 turn clockwise then i took and turned the full power adjustment donwn to the collar ....all of this seamed to do noting but make the power less my next plan is to change the fuel filter and take of the tach welded collar any advice? i feel like it may be running lean due to a lift pump and or plugged filter because even if i stop on the pedal it wont lay down black smoke like it did only a week ago

Fuel filter or the Lift Pump is getting bad. If it's not better after the filter change, put a guage in and check the fuel pressure.

I am suspect of your turnin the fuel pin 120 degrees

There is a little dot stamped on the diaghram plate usually and it should be at 12 oclock

if in doubt about the marks - then look at the pin, as it needs to have the deepest part of the pin facing the fuel pin at 9 o'clock

If it isnt then you found yur fuel issue

Fuel pressure should be 5-7psi at idle, no less than 3psi ever. Take it for a spin when you hook up the gauge- revving it in the driveway wont do anything to load the engine.

Your auto transmission could be robbing you of power- esp if it has the stock torque convertor. They are known to be quite sloppy.

Good find on the truck. Good idea for coating the frame with veggie oil to prevent rust. May not win any shows, but it would preserve it.

today i woked on my truck changed the fuel filter which was plugged solid from running on veggie oil, i think putting new clean diesel in it cleared out the tank of the veggie gunk then i changed the oil for huh? and giggles and put in rotella t 15-40 and tuf oil additive .... next i took and fooed with the spring tention under the diaphragm and found that turning it down aka less pressure on the spring gave me a balck puf then white smoke when i jumed on it , this confused me so i turned it back up and the tourq curve seemed to be better and turbo lag decreased .... i dont understand that i thought less pressure on the spring would mean more fuel at less boost leading to less lag......am i wrong?

tested lift pump pressure and it was 4 at idle and 5 at load

then i took and removed the spot welded collar on the full fuel pin and turned it in about one turn

all of this made thge truck wake up when i leap on the throttle it gives a black cloud but clears up as egt's rise and i can run the truck so that it dosent blow smoke at all

i also shaved down the little nylon washer/spacer and that seemed to make the truck better off the line and require less throttle to get up to speed

all in all im very happy next is a pyrometer so im gona drive the truck nice till i can see what my egts are doing

i agree my tourque converter is funky i can barly decipher where the truck shifts into third so i think that is the next big buy

any suggestions on a good converter and or good advice on how set up a pyrometer?

thanks for all your help

for the pyro search the forum there are instructions on how to do it but simply your going to drill a hole for the thermalcouple in the exhaust manifold closer to the turbo but there is a divider in there so search for the thread i belive there are pics in there too, for a converter Hughes makes one that is probolly the cheapest price and people have seemed to have good luck with it and DTT and Dave Goerend also offer converters its kinda a you pay for what you get deal i'm sure others will offer there advice too
