New Owner questions

Postby ekk33 » Thu Mar 29, 2007 5:53 am

First Post here,
I am from elmira, NY
I just bought a 92 W250 auto, stock as far as I can tell,
I am wondering if I need to do the killer dowel pin mod on my truck,
I just bought it. I search and find that some say a kit is needed, other just to tighten the bolts,
What parts are needed to complete this mod?

I also have a transmission cooler line leaking, can someone with a service manual point me in the right direction as to what kind of fitting it is? It is the one up by the block, on the passenger side.

I also would consider doing the 3200 govenor spring, but do i need to have guages installed to do this mod?

I am also hoping to make it to the Upstate NY wrench day, So i can learn some more about these trucks,

Does anyone know of a good place to get parts in the area?
Such as the gaskets for the timing cover, not sure if you can get them at the standard auto parts stores or not,

Thanks for the paitence

Eric, welcome to the club here too! :) If you can't get gaskets down there, (any truck shop should have them) let me know, I can get them at work. Yes! Gauges before any fuel mods! The only thing I would do with out gauges is a turbo housing. Anything else noticeably affects fuel, raising EGTs. I'm not sure what the fitting is that is leaking. :? I have a manual trans.

The killer dowl pin isn't really a mod but a fix of something that can go horribly wrong or it may not. But why take the chance. TST sells the tab method of repair which I would recomend doing.

I can't help ya on the tranny line fitting.

I used the guey stuff that comes out of a tube.

Welcome and have fun.

The tranny line that is leaking is likely going to the puny stock cooler. On my mom's 92, I replaced them recently. They had 15 years and 290K mi to harden and leak, so I fixed them, along with some other work. I got some 1/2 in transmission hose frmo NAPA, about 5-6ft, I think. Get 6ft and you will be more than safe.

I agree with PToombs- get gauges- pyrometer and tranny temp at the least. Boost (40+ psi), fuel pressure and tach are optional, and helpful in diagnosing stuff that can go wrong.

I'd also recommend replacing all the fluids from the radiaotr to the rear differential. If you have a limited slip rear end, get *2* bottles of friction modifier, whether you go synthetic or not. Better to slip a little than to grab around corners on dry pavement.

WElcome to the nut house.

Isn't Elmira where the air show used to be held? I have been there. You'd see a couple B-17's and/or B25's flying around at any one time. If your lucky, a P-40.

I think the Planes of Fame? I'd have to check the window decal in my truck.

Wings of Eagles air show

I am hoping to change the fluids next weekend, I would like to drive it a little before I change them, to get everything moving around, since the truck has sat for a while,

I am going to be ordering gauges soon, and hopefully be able to make it up to the NY wrench day, and maybe someone can go over some fuel adjustments while there,
Thanks for the help guys

Eric, if you want to go for a ride to Syracuse, I can help you out. I'm around most weekends. If you want to wait for wrench day, that's cool! Same place. I'm going to be working on my cab swap, for a while.
