Light White Idle Haze on a Stock Truck

Postby Begle1 » Sat Mar 31, 2007 5:44 pm

Since I've had my truck, it's liked to haze a bit at idle. I don't notice it much, usually only on hot days when I'm running it really hard. I'll pull to a stop and the I'm hazing light white smoke for a few yards out of the exhuast.

I was thinking it might be valves, but they're at spec now (and weren't really out of spec to begin with).

Is the haze normal, or do I need to look at my injectors or timing?

Sounds like the injectors are tired. You can give it some extra timing and it might clear up.

Nozzles-worn-down tired or need-to-be-rebuilt tired?

They arent expensive to get cleaned and reset to specs. I've gained up to 4mpg by that alone.

So can somebody enlighten me on the options for rebuilding injectors?

It's possible to get them adjusted back to in-spec pop pressure, which is required every hundred thousand miles, but if the nozzles are worn you need to spend $300 on new nozzles?

Either bad nozzles or pressure can cause white smoke?

The pump shops around here wanted like $18 bucks per new replacement nozzle. $300 is insane!

I thought nozzles were way more than that.

Can anybody show me a schematic of an injector? The nozzle is the tip with the holes in it, correct?

I have the VE manual in a PDF format. If you want it send me an e-mail to
leonaj99@yahoo.com
and I can reply with it. I think it has a cross section of the injector in there. Good ref material regardless.

On injector rebuilding....
The going rate around here (Ct) is about $55/60.
You need to decide whether you want to spend for rebuilding or if you want to upgrade.
2 years ago I decided to upgrade. I spent about the same $

I already got that Bosch manual too. I've read through it a couple times but the only conclusion I've come away with is that they deserve the money they get.

So how much money should these injector rebuilds cost? $60 per injector, including the $20 per tip, would be a good price?
How long does the rebuild take if I drop them off in town?

That'd be $360, for $400 I could get POD's, but I'd need water injection and turbo mod's to do that. And then I would be hazing lots more at idle, so it would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it? Now I'm starting to think like the government... :?

I got the 9 mm injectors, so I don't think there is much I could upgrade to without paying ~$800 for customs, which I'm not ready for yet regardless. Maybe buy some 7 mm 190's in case I ever wanted to put a 7 mm head on...

Just call around to pump shops and ask them what they would charge for the rebuild. The one I went to just charged labor and I can't remember what I paid just for that because I had some other things done too like the 3200 spring, a couple pump seals, etc...

I just removed my 320,000 mile 9 mills. I installed 185's 7mm injectors. It took away the idle haze and rough idle. However, I think I'll swap then out for POD's.

The 7mm units are more popular. Make that ten times more popular. You can move them if your not happy with them.
