?EXH HOUSING / TOWING / POWER ?

Postby 92 D/UNIT » Tue Apr 03, 2007 9:45 pm

im going to do some work a guys 90 non intercooled ctd in may. he says that he sick of the truck being a dog and wants some power (pump mods, exh housing, comp upgrade) the truck has 4' exh but thats all i know. was wondering what size exhaust housing works best with an auto. from the sounds of it he does pull a trailer but not sure how big or how much, so we need to keep the heat down, what size spools up good and keeps things cool? im thinking a 16 or 18.5 but ill leave it up to you pros. is a wastegated housing neccessarry ? also do the 90 models have a 21? he is in montana and will be passing thru idaho getting the kdp done just before i get the truck in may on his way may madness, ive never even met the guy or talked to him LOL! all being communicated thru another person. also he is wanting injectors but ive heard that the non intrcooled ones are larger than intercooled ones, so im leading towards leaving the stocks ones in. i was going to do the stuff to his truck that worked for me, but i dont tow much and dont want to be the one to blame if he burns it up so give me some pointers so i can start start ordering parts. all your input will be good to know while i try to get some more info out of the middle man LOL! so give me some hints and questions to ask to get this thing going in the right direction. thanks again

Stick with the stock 18.5 housing and stock injectors. You can get 300hp out of them. Then get the Stage 4 HTT upgrade. The 4" exhaust he has will definately be friendly to him. Max out the pump, and get a fuel pin. Should have some very nice numbers. My only worry here is that he has no way to control boost. You'd obviously have to tune the pump to stay around 40psi. Or, buy an exhaust housing/bigger turbo in general. The bigger the exhaust housing the better. I think the 12cm will be too restrictive. Idealy, he should upgrade to an S300 with a 14cm housing. It's only money right!

I suggest a pyrometer and a boost gage as part of the mods. He's going to need them if he tows.
The stock housing should be an 18.5 so I'd probably stick with that for now.
Other than what you're planning, the thing that got some really great results for me was when I replaced the wimpy cross-over pipe with a full 3 inch ID custome made pipe and the 3 inch intake horn that came (via BGilbert) from a Freightliner. At the same time I also modified my baby H1C by bolting on a compressor wheel and housing from a 94 WH1C.
Restriction gone, lag gone, faster spoolup, cooler temps, much more whine. :D

Hi,
I think a 90 is fitted with a 21cm squared housing(right?).. I've had the best luck with a 16cm with my auto...
I had a 14cm waistgated housing on my 92 5 speed but I preffer the higher flow of the 16 cm as well..
My bro in laws 92 runs best with a ported 18.5 when he pulls his 28 ft toybox.. all three of these trucks have modified HX35 compressors....

thanks for the info. going to stick with the 18.5 and going with a stage 3 comp upgrade 366 spring, stock inj, and pump mods. about what hp range will it be in after those mods.

also the truck has gauges.

Hard to say on the horsepower because the fuel wont be able to be up all the way or it'll overboost. I would think 40psi worth of fuel would put you at about 260-270ish with those mods. Bump the timing too.

If there is a indecision on what turbine housing check here http://dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm
It should have the info you need for the whole truck.
hope this helps

I am also helping a friend with his I'm putting on a 16cm for a little faster spool. He tows heavy so I didn't go smaller. He has I think 170's installed and a fuel pin no pump mods so i can get away with a 16cm other wise I would install the 18cm that I have.
