Factory Manual High Idle

Postby Bschwarzli » Tue Oct 06, 2009 5:36 am

If my memory serves me correct, on the 89/90's (not sure if it was still available after that) had a factory manual high idle lever under the dash on the 5 speed trucks.

Can anyone provide more info on these? I want to do install one on mine now that I have a 5 speed in it and am wanting it to look as factory as possible.

Any info or pictures of the points would be wonderful! Thanks!

I have the remains of 3 '91 5 speed trucks (2 intercooled, one not)and the high idle locks are NOT on them and they don't look to have ever had them.

It's my belief that they were offered to both aid in warmup and to kick the idle up for an application that used a PTO.

I sold a really nice set-up a while back and now I REALLY, REALLY wish I hadn't, I sold it too cheap and now I'd like to use it.

pullit, no, they hacked it all out of there.
All that remains is the cable tab on the pedal to indicate it was ever there.

I saw pulltilbrokes setup at SOP. I thought it was a shut off cable. It definitely looks different than an aftermarket shut off. I thought it was a pretty cool option. ;)

Some folks know this, but Chrysler offered a similar set-up for the mid-'70s through '89 Police Issue cars.
It's not as intricately designed as the diesel one, but the knob lettering and wording is the same.
They, too, are a hard piece to find complete.

I never saw those on the dodge cruisers. My dad patrolled in a couple diplomats and also a ram charger. One of the diplomats had a 360 installed when the 318 blew up. Went real nice.

Pullit - Thanks! That is awesome!

Question on the gas pedal though. Is that bracket for the cable bolted, welded, or what onto the pedal?

Also, how many settings does it have? As in how many different rpm points can you set it at?

Also, does anyone know if this was a option on the trucks or standard equipment?

The bracket for the pull cable is made into the main pedal bracket, IIRC.
It has a limiter on it, it'll only go so far, I think around 1200 rpms, if everything is adjusted properly.
The rpm capability is "infinite" to it's upper limits, meaning it adjusts and you lock it where you want it, but only as high or low as it's design.

From what I have seen the rpm/idle lock is standard on the '89-'90 5 speed trucks.
I haven't seen it on anything else, but that's not to say someone couldn't have it dealer installed, or ordered with it.

An interesting note, I have the "window sticker" for the '90 1 ton that broke the cam, and on that sticker it actually calls out the idle lock assembly with an option code.
I didn't realize that the 1990 1-ton Cummins trucks were also nearly $20,000 new, until I saw it on an old invoice recently, either.

I installed a hand throttle like this:

Even works pretty good as a rudimentary cruise control. It'll hold speed nicely on flat terrain, with just a bit of pedal pressure to maintain on moderate grades.

Robert, if you look close, you can see where the cable arm is riveted to the bracket. The cable actually pulls the arm up, pushing the throttle pedal lever up.

Id like to make one for my truck. I was thinking about a simple steel rod that connects to the pedel somehow and was threaded on the other end. Bolt it up somewhere in reach and find some kind of nut thats easy on the fingers and just back the nut out towards the driver to push the pedel farther down thus giving higer rpm. Any thoughts on that?

Pete - I see that. What is baffling me is why that works. Should the cable not be pulling the pedal DOWN so that the throttle cable to the injection pump is pulled toward the driver thus increasing fuel to motor?

Why would pulling the pedal UP work? People lift off the pedal when wanting to go slower.
