Rear Dana 70 axle bearing removal question

Postby roxxx » Wed Oct 14, 2009 3:15 pm

When you are changing the Axle bearings ? I cannot remember do you have to use a bearing splitter to get the inner axle bearing off ?
and do you have to press the bearing back on

 I just cant remember thank you

No, they just ride behind a lip seal, just like the front ones do.
The only "special" tool required is the oddball Dodge-only nut tool to remove the bearing nut.

Uh, I might be mis-reading your posting, or you're not clear on which bearings you are working with.
Are you working with the bearings on the drum/hub assembly, or are you working on the CARRIER bearings?
On a Dana 70 there are no "axle bearings" per se.

The bearings in the hubs are not pressed on in any way. They just slide on/off the spindle.

Best way I've found to grease or service the inner wheel bearing is this. Get yourself a long punch of sorts, preferably made of brass or aluminum. With the drum laying on the floor, hub sticking upward, beat on the inner race of the wheel bearing which will drive out the oil seal. If servicing the inner wheel bearing, you should already be replacing the oil seal IMO. Brass or aluminum will not gouge or damage anything inside the hub because it is softer. Works the same if you are beating, in or out, the races inside the hub. Just don't hit the roller cage on the bearing cause you can damage it. Piece of cake.

If you are trying to get the axle off, a firm tap with a sledge hammer straight in line with the axle will cause it to bounce back and come loose.

I've worked at a very large electric motor repair shop for the last 20 years and have installed thousands of bearings, and if you ever have a bearing that is a press fit you can heat up the bearing in youe oven or on a 100w light bulb thene quickly and very smoothly install it on the shaft and it will work very fine, the actual temp of the bearing should be around 300/450 deg f. any hotter and you can take up the ball clearance and lock up the bearing, thats bad.
