some second gen carnage

Postby cumminspuller98 » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:05 am

its not a first gen but im sure you guys will like to see what a real injection pump will tear up :D LOL
here is how it happened....yesterday i passed a car....dropped to 4th ran it up to around 4,440 rpm hit 5th and ran it up to around 3,300 or so and let out of it. egt's hit 1700 deg and when i cam up to the t road it had a bad miss through the intake. i was only a mile from home i so i limped it on home.....i first thought it was the inejction pump, so i was in the process of pulling it off when i saw brown water on the shop floor below the truck....and thought OH F*** i looked at the side of the block and it was streaked with oil/coolant, poped the cap and the antifreeze was brownis black. and several of the head studs had oil/coolant wicking up through them. so i yanked it all apart and pulled the head to find this.........

My yellow truck blew between holes once and it just had a dead miss, never even leaked! Looks like it is time to o-ring that bad boy.

My brothers second gen head gasket gave out on him yesterday as well. His cause was a combination of a fairly new compound turbo setup and - the real culprit - an improperly torqued head gasket. His head has been fire-ringed.

Why did only 1 cyl get chewed and the others are OK? Did an injector go bad or something?

Yea inj failure. Rule of thumb. Have injectors checked every 100,000 or so. This is a 240,000 mile bone stock truck with a b-1 turbo to keep it cooler than stock. That really worked huh

The coolant in #1 probably got in when you pulled the head. Better check with a straight edge where that gasket blew, might be warped. Did all the head bolts seem tight?
