choked out?

Postby stock91w350 » Tue Jan 19, 2010 1:55 pm

i was driving today when my truck started bogging down bad and smoking wicked, then it kinda made some popping sounds, so i pulled over to look things over, only thing i could think of is that the air filter was to dirty so i took it off drove a few miles home and it seemed fine. the filter is a cone style hooked to a s shaped tube from the turbo over to the pass side fender, i put this filter on new in november and only have drove 1400 miles since. i do have a crack in my down pipe that lets some smoke out under the hood. how many miles should i b getting out of a air filter?

My first thought is that your filter had nothing to do with what happened. Maybe you had a spurt of bad fuel? Maybe it's a sign of an injector starting to give out?

i had a simular problem this fall. i was running a hood stack which was just plain awesome but once winter struck the plow went on every storm. while on the interstate i would be doin 60 no prob but then if i put the pedal to the floor it should have smoked pretty heavily but it didnt. no smoke came out the stack then it felt like 30 seconds later all the smoke would come up and over the plow! liek the wind from the plow drew the soot down and up. well finding this kinda cool did it a few times. drove the truck 2 times on the interstate during a big storm we had. well i was seeing around 45-50 pounds of boost before the hood stack then after then one say i was only seeing 25 pounds or so. i opened the hood to see my 8" by 17" tube komatsu air filter sucked down into a triangle ans had collapsed the filter end starting to mushroom. so the soot blocked the filter that bad. an old filter went on and bam back to performance! got rid of the hood stack and now i have a AMSOIL dry filter with the prefilter in there and it breathes very well now. sorry for the long post

Its snowing out, did you get clogged up with snow? was the filter wet?
