1 or 2 batteries

Postby Swaggs » Mon Feb 22, 2010 4:42 am

Does anyone know if these trucks ever came with one battery? I bought my 92 about a year ago, and there is only one battery, i dont see any more cables, and not even sure where another one would go..

First Gen trucks all had one battery from the factory. It was a group 31 with 1100 CCA if I remember right.

hey-Hey!!!,
Only seen single batteries in Gen 1's. Been considering a sealed Optima mounted behind the seat. I figure as long as it is the same family( as in top colour, in my case blue ) as the one in the stock location a second set of cells is not going to cause me issues. Now it will load up the alternator more on charge after start...:) My '70 Econcoline did not have a big enough alternator stock to handle the biggest battery the tray would accomodate, but an uprated one settled that one comfortably after I melted down the stocker.

Now if you find a place close by the original under the hood the positive cable from an '85 F250 6.9 L will make hooking them in parallel easy; Fords all came with dual batteries( mounted on both sides of the radiator ).
cheers,
Douglas

Douglas, you can put 2 Optimas on the battery tray. You just have to turn them a 1/4 turn. ;)

alright, thats what I was thinking, since there seems to be no place that a second was mounted.. my brothers friend worked for chrysler back in the 90s and his dad had a 1st gen, and said they all had 2 batteries.. he must be nuts.. thanks again

hey-Hey!!!,
Does that include the big 31's? I figure why not go all the way...:) I *DO* feel a bit silly just asking this outright without looking, but here it is anyway. My 6.9 F250 had two big ones and it would crank and start when it was cold enough to give my finger frostbite from grabbing the ignition switch.
cheers,

Not sure on that, I just saw a pic of dual Optimas on the stock tray someplace. Buddy of mine has 2 31's in his, he pulled out the tray, bolted it to a 2nd one, lowered it about 2 inches, a 1/4 turn, and put it back. There are pics here someplace of it all done. The top of the post is just under the lip on the fender.

He was probably thinking of the rounder trucks. From '94 on they had 2 batteries.
