Shutdown Soleniod Replacment

Postby doublel89 » Fri Feb 26, 2010 9:24 am

How big of a job is replacing the shutdown solenoid? I've already re done the wiring to it and it will still randomly cut out.

It's funny; the Cummins QuickServe procedure consists of one line: "Remove the valve."

Real freaking helpful.

Here's the picture blown up.

I don't know if the way I do it is proper or not, but first I unbolt the plate that sticks up with the two holes in it. You remove two and loosen the third of the four long Allen-headed bolts that hold the plate onto the head onto the pump, and then the plate swings down out of the way. Then I use a 24mm open-ended wrench to remove the solenoid.

Either cut or break off that bracket. I cut mine most of the way, then bent it back and forth with a crescent wrench to snap it off. Some guys just use the crescent wrench. At the 2nd hole down is the hot spot. ;) You don't have to loosen anything that way.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Is it dangerous to loosen the bracket? Are you risking something inside getting out of alignment or something?

i just bent that bracket enough times that it eventually broke free. then i did not have a 24mm open end wrench so i think i had a 7/8" with a .014" shim on the back side of the wrench and got her out of there. i used the $10 solenoid from teh VW guys website. Been ran ateast 30 full throttle runs with good results. i have a thread started in the Engine section about the different brands and places to buy the solenoids.

Pretty sure the bolts hold the head on. Bad idea to loosen and tighten something like that that's under pressure. Do it enough and it will start to leak. Especially since it's only sealed with an o-ring.

CHeck your plunger tip- it may just need filing down to make it flat again.

The solenoids from the VW guy has been good for me.

I think it is, Jeff. I do remember eating up several plungers in a short time when I put the stock injectors back in. Is it not working at all, or have you looked into it? The pump is flowing around 125cc of fuel- too much to be running through stock injectors.

I may have an o-ring for the shut down lever, though I cant imagine why it would be leaking- it got rebuilt in 07.

The shut off lever o-ring can be done on the truck. You just have to be sure to keep the same orientation of the shaft so it will actually shut down when you pull the cable. Give me your address and I can get a good plunger in the mail in the next week or two.
